The Elden Ring Movie is NOT a Idea

Article at a glance:
- I’ve been a FromSoft fan since Dark Souls, and Elden Ring is easily one of my favorite games ever.
- The news about an Elden Ring movie has me feeling… uneasy, to say the least.
- A24 and George R.R. Martin are involved, which sounds great—but can a movie really capture what makes Elden Ring special?

How I wish FromSoft could escape the clutches of Bandai Namco and do their own thing. I refuse to believe that FromSoft had any say over greenlighting an Elden Ring movie adaptation. Why? Who asked for this? Who is this movie for? And as you may know, I am a HUGE fan of FromSofte games. I have been with them since the original Dark Souls. Elden Ring is one of my favorite games to play, I frequently download it again every few months to mess around in the world. Because there’s nothing else that matches the feeling of playing Elden Ring.
I didn’t want to talk about this but when I was playing Nightreign today, I couldn’t help but think about the Elden Ring movie. And that brings us here. So well, let’s get into it.

Why am I worried about the Elden Ring Movie?
Look, let me make this very clear. I don’t want this movie to be bad. If we can get a peak cinema Elden Ring adaptation, we all win. It has been a while since Hollywood put out a good fantasy movie anyway. On top of that, the studio behind the movie, A24 is not bad either. They have made some awesome films like Hereditary and Everything Everywhere All at Once. On top of that, it has been confirmed that George RR Martin himself is also involved with the movie. So that’s a good thing.
Why am I still worried then? Look, Elden Ring has a huge pool of lore and history to draw from. But the thing is, Elden Ring is a gameplay-first type of game, it is not very story-driven the way something like the new God of War games are. Most fans of Elden Ring became fans because of the amazing gameplay and the huge world to explore. A movie version won’t have any of that. So much of Elden Ring is about getting lost in the HUGE map FromSoft handcrafted for us, how could a movie possibly replicate that feel?

So that only leaves the movie with the narrative. They have to make good use of the world and the rich lore present throughout it to make the movie compelling and somehow, the movie still has to appeal to the casual audience. That is a hefty task. And I hope you see the problem with that. I don’t want this movie to fail but I just don’t think that adapting Elden Ring into a movie is a good idea and I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong. Again, I really hope that the movie is absolute cinema and I have to eat my words.
That is all for now
Sorry if I came across as overly doompost-y towards the end there but I don’t want Elden Ring to suffer the same fate as Borderlands or Minecraft. I don’t care if the Minecraft movie was a mega-hit, that movie will still cringe and badly written. But yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
