The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity episode 1 was Beautiful

Article at a glance:

  • Netflix is pulling the same nonsense again—delaying The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity for non-Asian regions until September 7th just to bundle it with dubs.
  • Luckily, I live in Asia and got to watch Episode 1 on time, and trust me, CloverWorks absolutely cooked.
  • It’s a classic romance setup, but the presentation, animation, and pacing elevate it big time.

I don’t want to start this article on a negative note, but I just have to. Netflix is withholding the release of this anime in multiple non-Asian countries until September 7th; a TWO-MONTH delay! This is the kind of shit that turns people to piracy, the kind that killed the hype behind Summertime Render. And why? Just so the anime drops with dubs in multiple languages! Netflix, I appreciate the effort to reach a wider audience, but delaying The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 1 for two whole months will only push people away!

Fortunately, I live in an Asian country, so I can watch it already. But I will still never forgive Netflix for doing shit like this. But, rant over; I can go back to praising this anime now because MAN, CloverWorks COOKED. So welcome back to another article, and today we are talking about The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 1! No spoiler warning today because there isn’t much to spoil here anyway.

What did I think of The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 1?

Look, I’ll be honest, it was a pretty standard introduction episode for a romance anime. But presentation makes all the difference, and this anime absolutely wins points for that. Let’s start with the animations first, because CloverWorks did NOT need to COOK this hard, but they did. They made Kaoruko look adorable, I have no idea how many hours they spent on getting her hair right alone lol. The opening theme, too, the show looks stunning, and I adore the art style as a whole.

Aside from that, the writing for the first episode was pretty decent. It did a good job of establishing both our main characters, with Rintarou as the gentle giant, who often gets misunderstood, and Kaoruko as the cute damsel who doesn’t get why people are scared of him. The pacing is tight, there are no wasted moments in Episode 1, at least, and everything sets up the upcoming character arcs perfectly. The story is servicable, again, you are not watching a romance anime for the story, but it is the typical boy-girl fall in love despite social divide story.

I don’t really have any criticisms for the first episode overall. As I said, the episode was presented extremely well, and it does everything a first episode should do really well. I really look forward to seeing more of this anime. If you are a fan of the romance genre, I can wholeheartedly recommend this anime, and I have a feeling that I am going to end up loving this show.

That is all for now
