The Ice Guy Review: A Decent rom-com

Key takeaways from The Ice Guy review:

  • “The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague” is a rom-com anime set in a world where descendants of mythical spirits live among humans and have unique “abilities” that reflect their emotions.
  • The strength of the anime lies in its well-written characters and their interactions, although the plot progression can feel slow at times.
  • The animations and soundtracks are also well-done, contributing to the overall charm of the series.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague 2nd Main Trailer Released

Well, I should specify, the 2nd best rom-com this season for me. The best rom-com in this season has to be the Angel Next Door in my opinion. I did a review on that already though and that is not what we are here to talk about today. Today we will be talking about The Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague. Another anime I didn’t really expect to enjoy as much as I did. Think Horimiya mixed with a hint of Wotakoi and you get this anime.

So welcome back to another one of my reviews. Today let’s talk about The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague. I really enjoyed this anime; probably more than I should have. It did not reach the same highs as The Angel Next Door for me, but it is a decent rom-com nonetheless. So let’s get started.

Plot

In the world of The Ice Guy and HIs Cool Female Colleague, descendants of different mythical spirits exist and they live together with humans. Since they are descendants of spirits though, they have weird “abilities”. Now, these “abilities” are used as a way of expressing the said character’s emotions adding a whole new level to the presentation of this anime.

Other than that, it is a standard office rom-com plot and is mostly carried hard by the characters and character interactions. Presentation matters a lot in a rom-com and this anime really does nail the presentation. Another clean no BS rom-com with a great presentation, I like it. My only problem would be that the plot progression feels really slow at times. I don’t know if everyone feels that way but, I’d have liked it if this anime moved a little faster.

Characters

This is the real strength of this anime. The characters and character interactions are really well done. The character development may feel lacking at times but, I am quite satisfied with the character writing so it is fine. I love how the “abilities” are used to showcase the thoughts and reactions of our MC, Himuro. My guy here is head over heels for Fuyutsuki and I really hope he asks her out soon enough.

The main duo is pretty good but the cast of side characters is really entertaining as well. Saeijima has one of my favorite VAs so of course I will remember him for a while but even other characters like the manager, Komori, Katori, etc. are really entertaining and memorable. I still wish we got a little more character development but again, I think it is still fine because of how entertaining the character interactions are.

Animations and Soundtracks

Now, I’ve said this many times, the presentation is a big part of The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague’s charm. The animations really do live up to that. The feel of this anime would’ve died down if the animations weren’t on point but, they are awesome. The soundtracks are pretty good too; I really love the opening theme.

Conclusion

Here are my final scores for The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague:

  • Plot – 7/10
  • Characters – 8/10
  • Animations – 8/10
  • Soundtracks – 7/10
  • Enjoyment – 7/10
  • Need for more office rom-coms – 10/10
  • Overall – 7/10
