The Irregular At Magic High School Season 3 So Far Has Been…

Article at a glance:

  • Season 3 of The Irregular at Magic High School struggles to capture the charm of its predecessors, with new characters failing to match the appeal of established favorites like Mayumi and Juumonji.
  • Shippou Takuma emerges as a standout new character, showing promise for substantial character growth after being humbled in Episode 4.
  • Despite mixed character introductions, the season sets up intriguing plot developments, leaving viewers eager to see how the established storylines unfold in future episodes.

A mixed bag. The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 has been a mixed bag so far. There are things that I like about it but there are some things that are just not clicking. And while Season 2 was good, I am still left with the overwhelming feeling that “Season 1 was better” so far with this season. Season 1 was by no means perfect but it had a certain charm that gripped you immediately along with charming characters. This season is sorely lacking that charm.

This issue stands out even more when you consider that the plot trajectory of this season is similar to Season 1. Cause you know, it is starting from the new session of school. Meaning that the inter-school competitions we saw in Season 1, we will get to see them again. So welcome to my first mid-season review for this season. Today we are talking about The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3. Let’s get started.

What do I think of The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 so far?

The new session means that Tatsuya and Miyuki are 2nd years now. It also means that certain characters have graduated and certain new characters are introduced. And right off the bat, the new characters simply don’t match the charm of people like Mayumi, Juumonji, Mari, etc. I know that Mayumi is still an important character but she isn’t a main character now like she was in Season 1. This really hurts because the characters I mentioned played a big part in making Season 1 as good as it was.

Mayumi’s sisters (1st years) simply don’t compare to her in terms of sheer charm. And they don’t have fun interactions with any other characters like Mayumi did so far. The only new character that has me hooked is Shippou Takuma. He is a very proud individual, but in episode 4, he got humbled quickly and showed the limits of his ability. And we get to see just how frustrated he was after seeing the duel between Tatsuya and Tomitsuka. I hope that this experience leads to some good character development for him.

As far as the plot is concerned, so far, we have got a bunch of setups. It will be interesting to see where all the setup leads in the upcoming episodes. The production quality in general is still pretty good. The animations and soundtracks are quite good as always.

That is all for now!

I may have sounded harsh but those were all fair criticisms. And despite all that, I have still had fun watching The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
