Top 10 Anime of 2023

Key points for Top 10 Anime of 2023:

  • The list covers my picks for the top 10 best anime of 2023
  • I do my best to cover diverse genres and shows, enjoy!

Well, here we are. After planning this article for a week and a half, we are finally here. I did a top 10 article for last year as well. But this year, just picking 10 anime was hard as hell. There were SO, SOOOO many great anime this year that could have made it to the list but unfortunately, I have to pick only 10. This year was so good, that I could have done a convincing top 10 for every season. Either way though, after quite a bit of internal debate, I think I have the Top 10 Anime of 2023.

So welcome to a massive article. Today I will list my picks for the Top 10 Anime of 2023. These picks will be based on a combination of critical reception, community reception, and a bit of personal opinion. This is my list, of course, so feel free to disagree with me. The list is in seasonal order, these picks are NOT RANKED. It was hard enough picking just 10 smh. Only anime released in 2023 qualify. So animes that released in 2022 and continued airing into 2023 like Blue Lock or MHA Season 6 do not qualify. And if the anime released multiple seasons this year, I will only count 1 of them.

With all the disclaimers out of the way, let’s get started with the Winter 2023 Season.

Vinland Saga Season 2

Of course, this deserves to be on the list. Later in the year, Mappa gets deep into controversy but at this point, we were just enjoying their fantastic work and “I have no enemies” memes. But holy shit was this season good. Taking away the action and the revenge element from the plot, somehow ended up making the series better in my opinion. Even though the violence and revenge were such key parts of season 1. The plot, the character development, and the fact that the show still doesn’t shy away from showing how dark that period in history was are all praiseworthy.

DanMachi Season 4 Part 2

I don’t give a damn what people may think of this placement. If you think the series sucks, just go and watch Season 4’s both parts and come back. Till the very last episode, this season kept us all on the edge and didn’t let up the tension till the very last minute. I honestly have no words. It was always going to be hard to follow up Season 4 Part 1 but Part 2 surpassed it. God, how much I wish that this show got a better budget to show off some of the amazing fights in this season. Either way though, please do not sleep on this. DanMachi Season 4 as a whole was just amazing.

Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village-arc

Look, we all know that Demon Slayer is always going to find its way on an Anime of the Year list and 2023 is no different. And I think we can all agree that we are just here to see what kind of crazy stuff UFOTable does with the animations. And sure enough, this season did not disappoint. The setting of the village was incredibly well realized in the anime. The fights look mind-blowing as always and I liked the new characters this arc introduced. The fights are only going to get crazier as the series gets closer to the end.

Oshi No Ko

Aside from Jujutus Kaisen, Oshi no Ko had the biggest climb in popularity this year. It is insane just how much this anime was talked about during this whole season. It pretty much had the community in its stranglehold for the Spring Season. And that was for a good reason. Not only did the show catch us all of-guard with the mini-movie they presented us as the first episode. The show continued surprising us with how dark could it get and exploring the insides of the entertainment industry and amazing characters to go along with all that.

Bungou Stray Dogs Season 5

I hate BSD Season 5 for what it did to my sanity. Every single time you start to see a light at the end of the tunnel, this anime makes the tunnel longer or takes the light completely. I am not joking, that is literally what Seasons 4 and 5 of the show have been like. Just a constant stream of unpredictable plot twists. And man, on top of that amazing plot, they also managed to have some of the best character moments in the year. Bungou Stray Dogs was on fire this year.

Bleach TYBW Part 2

As a huge Bleach fan, I do admit that I am somewhat biased but I cannot deny the fact that Bleach TYBW Part 2 gave us some of the best-looking fights this year, period. Even though manga for this arc has been out for years, the anime still managed to surprise us manga readers too because of the sheer amount of anime original content in this season. The best episodes of this season, the last 3 episodes were almost completely anime original. This is wild, and that kind of improvement alone warrants this season a place in the Top 10 Anime of 2023.

Mushoku Tensei II

Just like Viland Saga, Mushoku Tensei also pulled back a lot on the action compared to Season 1. But again, the amount of character development we got in this season is pretty astounding. Mushoku Tensei also gave us quite a few big lore bombs this season. The introduction of Nanahoshi really up what we knew about the world and I like that. Putting world-building aside though, Sylphy was absolutely the MVP of this season, Her character development was so well done.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

Yes, there is a lot of controversy surrounding Jujutsu Kaisen 2. I considered NOT putting it on the list but hear me out. Jujutsu Kaisen has experienced a MASSIVE surge in popularity this year. It wasn’t entirely because of the anime of course, but there is still the fact that Jujutsu Kaisen memes are EVERYWHERE now, And I cannot ignore a growth in popularity of that scale. There is also the fact that this season was fun as hell. Utterly and truly unpredictable with some memorable fights and character moments. That is why is it one of the Top 10 Anime of 2023.

The Apothecary Diaries

Yes, this anime absolutely deserves to be on this list. Why? Because of how different this anime is what we are used to seeing. The setting is very unique, the plot despite being mostly episodic is really well-written and it builds well on previous incidents. This show has everything. From a bit of period drama, to comedy, to some dark stuff and you may actually learn something new watching it as well. It is hard to describe but what they have managed with The Apothecary Diaries, only a few other anime can do.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

To be honest, I didn’t much like this anime in the beginning. But then about 3 episodes in, this anime really started to hit. And now, I can barely even wait for the 2nd cour of the season to start. Just like The Apothecary Diaries, Frieren is kind of episodic and it is a complete package. But on top of all that, Frieren has some amazing world-building. Every major fight also contributes further to this world-building. The magic system is also very deep and I respect that. Combine all of that with the signature melancholic feeling of this anime. and you have a potential masterpiece in your hands.

Hon Mentions: Eminence in Shadow Season 2, Dr. Stone: New World (Both Parts), Horimiya: Piece, Hell’s Paradise, Yamada-kun and Gundam: Witch From Mercury Part 2

That is all for now!

Those were my picks for the Top 10 Anime of 2023! The number of honorable mentions alone should tell you how hard it was to make this list. Let me know yours in the comments, just please be respectful, these are all subjective after all. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!!
