Key points for My Top 5 New Anime of the Season:
- The Fall 2023 anime season offers a diverse range of genres, from rom-com in “Our Dating Story” to character depth in “I’m in Love with the Villainess” and historical intrigue in “The Apothecary Diaries.”
- The competition for the top spot is intense, with “Frieren” delivering an emotionally resonant experience and “Ragna Crimson” standing out for its unique fantasy world, stunning visuals, and compelling characters.
- “Ragna Crimson” clinches the number one spot due to the sheer enjoyment I had from it, blending an interesting plot, distinctive art style, and engaging characters for a truly entertaining watch.
A month into the Fall 2023 season and man, this season has been amazing. And I think it is probably my favorite season of the year. If I think of “anime of the season” at least 5 to 6 different names pop up in my head. That is how you know that a season is amazing. Two of those names are also on this list. What are we talking about today? Well, my Top 5 picks for the “new” anime in this season.
What do I mean by “new” here? Simple, no sequels allowed. So all anime that are currently airing their season 1 qualify. And of course, this is my list and I am not watching “everything” since you know, I alone can only watch so much. So this is going to be very opinionated. So let me know yours in the comments. With all that said though, let’s get started with my Top 5 new anime of the season.
5. Our Dating Story
There’s not much to say here, it is just a normal rom-com for the most part. I think it does the introverted guy dating an extroverted girl dynamic pretty well. I have seen this dynamic being executed better in other anime but that doesn’t make this one bad. Also, the latest episode actually gave us some depth so moving forward, things might get a little more interesting. Still, a fun watch if nothing else.
4. I’m in Love with the Villainess
This anime actually has a surprising amount of character depth. For something I expected to be another isekai rom-com but Yuri turned out to have a lot more depth than I ever imagined. For now, though, Rae is hard carrying this anime herself. Her character is really well-written and I wish that we get similar depth for Claire down the line too. She shows some subtle character development so that’s promising.
3. The Apothecary Diaries
This anime has been way more entertaining than it has any right to be. It has a little bit of everything. A decent plot, some history, a distinct art style, and animations, and all of that is strung together by interesting characters and their entertaining banter. The characters are surprisingly deep as well, this is pretty apparent in episodes 3 and 4. Great anime overall.
It is a very close competition between this and the first place. The last few episodes of Frieren have been buying amazing and next week’s episode looks to be even better. Awesome plot, the melancholic feel of certain sections hits you right in the feels. Some great character work and some awesome world-building too. Everything is done to near perfection, awesome anime.
1. Ragna Crimson
This barely takes the first place over Frieren mainly because I have been having a blast watching this series. An interesting plot, with a rather unique take on a fantasy world along with a good power system and detailed hierarchy for dragons, makes this anime good. But what pushes it beyond “good” are the visuals and the characters. The art style is very distinct with some amazing character designs and the animations are awesome. On top of that, we have awesome characters like Crimson. Definitely one of my favorite anime from this season.
That is all for now!
Those were my top 5 new anime of this season. Let me know yours in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
