Tower of God Season 2 Review: A Let Down

Article at a glance:

  • Season 2’s rushed pacing undermines the impact of the plot and character arcs, despite good twists and story potential.
  • New characters and dynamics, especially Bam’s arc, suffer from a lack of development due to limited screen time.
  • Season 2’s animations lack the uniqueness of Season 1, but the soundtracks and themes remain strong.

Let me start off by saying that Tower of God Season 1 wasn’t a perfect adaptation of the LN either. It skipped over a lot of stuff as well. And yet Season 2 feels more underwhelming compared to Season 1 despite having a lot more cool material to work with. This review will try to answer why Tower of God Season 2 feels so underwhelming compared to Season 1. And if you ask me, there are a few reasons for this and I am going to discuss them one by one.

And yeah, I still somewhat enjoyed Season 2. Sometimes, I tuned out of it but as a whole, I did enjoy it a bit. So welcome to another review and today we have Tower of God Season 2 on the block. Let’s talk about it.

Plot

Compared to Season 1, the pacing of Season 2 is a lot more erratic. I don’t know how but Season 1 managed to have a pretty good pacing despite skipping around a lot in the source material. But in Season 2, you can feel how rushed certain sections are. Important plot points are not given enough time to sink in, we are constantly moving from one important moment to another but then there are suddenly times when the plot grinds to a halt. This in turn also kind of makes it hard to keep track of the story, especially if you haven’t watched Season 1 in a while.

This is a shame too because the overall story for Season 2 is quite good too, there are a few decent plot twists thrown in as well. But the pacing harms the impact of the story so much it is not even funny. I know that there are a few more good plot twists coming. But at this point, the pacing has harmed this season too much.

Characters

Season 2 does have some good characters. We get glimpses of the old cast from Season 1 here and there, Khun is still an important character after all. But the new cast is pretty good as well. Wangnan has become such a good friend to Bam. Bam’s character arc for this season, learning to rely on others and finding new friends again could’ve been so much better though. If they gave it more time, it could’ve been a really compelling arc. Instead, it is now just there for two or three episodes at best.

So yeah, the characters and character dynamics are good. But they could’ve been a lot better if they had more time to develop.

Animations and Soundtracks

Again, Season 1 had amazing animations. Season 2’s animations are pretty good too but the uniqueness is gone. Season 1 had a very distinct art style with thick outlines that gave it a hand-drawn feel. But, Season 2 doesn’t have that and hence ends up looking generic despite having good animations. At least the soundtrack quality is still there. The BGMs carry so many scenes hard. And the opening and ending themes are also bangers.

Summing Up

Here are my final review scores for Tower of God Season 2:

  • Plot – 6/10
  • Characters – 7/10
  • Animations – 7/10
  • Soundtracks – 8/10
  • Enjoyment – 7/10
  • Overall – 6.5/10
