Undead Unluck, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:
“Undead Unluck” features a unique and engaging storyline about Negators, individuals with powers to negate different things, with a well-paced plot and rich world-building.
The dynamic between the charismatic Andy (Undead) and the reserved Fuuko (Unluck) is compelling, supported by a strong cast of side characters.
Produced by David Productions, known for “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” the anime boasts excellent animation, art, and soundtracks, though it includes significant gore.

So I recently started watching this anime after seeing its sequel announcement. It’s not a full sequel, it’s just a special episode but still that got me curious. So I decided to give Undead Unluck a chance and oh boy, had I known it was made by David Productions, I would have watched it sooner. It is entertaining, has a nice concept, and interesting story. I wish I had checked this out for last year’s top 10 anime list. But better late than never, I suppose.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series, this week we are talking about Undead Unluck. I’ve had a lot of fun watching it so let’s talk about it!

Introduction

Undead Unluck is based on the manga of the same name by Tozuka Yoshifumi. It has been serialized in one and only Weekly Shounen Jump since January 2020. As for the anime, as I mentioned, it is made by David Productions. Yes, the David Productions, the people who made JoJo. It aired in the Fall 2023 season and currently has a single season of 24 episodes. A sequel special episode was recently announced and will air in the Winter 2025 season. So hopefully, we will get Season 2 next year as well.

Plot

There are people with powers to “negate” different things in the world called “Negators”. Undead and Unluck are two such Negators. Their powers are quite self-explanatory. Fuuko, the Unluck has had a terrible life because of her power to bring bad luck to anyone who touches her. And just when she is about to end things after her favorite romance manga ends, she is approached by Undead. Undead just wants to die and aims to use Fuuko’s ability to that end.

But that’s not all. There is a mysterious organization of Negators chasing Andy and Fuuko. But that’s just the beginning. There is a lot more going on that I won’t spoil because the world of this anime is very interesting and I think it’s best to experience it for yourself. The plot is paced incredibly well and it is quite good as well to compliment the awesome world-building.

Characters

Andy, the Undead is a charismatic and whimsical MC. He is never shy about using his powers. He doesn’t even use a sheath for his sword, he just stabs it somewhere in his body to store it. And this quirky personality of his is perfectly reflected in the way he fights. Fuuko, the Unluck then is the complete opposite of him. Someone who has stayed a shut-in for ages and is reserved and socially awkward. But Andy changes her and their dynamic is amazing. Pair this amazing duo with side characters like Shen, Gina, Akra, etc. and you have an amazing cast.

The characters just enhance the story so much more. The whole thing between Gina and Andy was so well done, for example.

Animations and Soundtracks

I should just repeat the fact that this anime is made by David Productions here to give you an idea of how good the production is. Everything from the art to the animations, to the music is spot-on. Fair warning, this anime does have a lot of gore/blood because of the way Andy fights. So if you don’t like this, stay away from this.
