Uzumaki Anime Adaptation – Let’s talk about it…

Article at a glance:

  • Junji Itou’s short, impactful manga style poses a challenge for adaptation, particularly in maintaining the eerie atmosphere in animation.
  • Despite the excitement for the Uzumaki anime, delays have left fans eagerly awaiting its release, likely due to the careful approach needed to capture Itou’s unique horror.
  • With studios aiming for a black-and-white art style to preserve the manga’s essence, fans anticipate a potential masterpiece but are willing to wait for quality adaptation.

Junji Itou’s works are very hard to adapt into an anime format. This is for a few reasons. One of them is the fact that he doesn’t make “full-length” mangas, most of his works are rather short. But that is a small issue. The other, bigger issue is that his style of horror and his art kind of loses its impact in color or if the animation is half-baked. So it requires a lot of effort to get right. Because of these and a few other reasons, it is very rare to see a Junji Itou work get adapted into an anime. So when an anime for Uzumaki was announced, all of us Junji Itou fans were excited.

But then the anime has been “missing” for a while now. It was “supposed” to come out last year but was pushed back. So what’s up with that? Honestly, I am not quite sure myself. But I wanted to talk about the Uzumaki anime and give my two cents on it, so here we are. Let’s get started.

What do we know about the Uzumaki Anime?

As I mentioned, Uzumaki is one of Junji Itou’s most popular works. And that is for a good reason, it is creepy and terrifying. I lost sleep for a few days after this and now every time I see a spiral pattern, I get small PTSD flashbacks. It was published in the Big Comic Spirits magazine from January 1998 to August 1999. It is just 19 chapters or 3 volumes long. And of course, as you may have guessed, it is a horror manga. Typical Junji Itou-style body and cosmic horror.

As for the anime, it will be made by two studios, Drive and Akatsuki. Drive is a relatively new studio; all the recent KonoSuba stuff, including the currently airing Season 3. Akatsuki has produced some good anime but I don’t recognize any of their animation works. Now, it seems that the anime will be going for a black-and-white art style. Which is good as it will preserve the natural eerieness of Junji Itou’s art. The shots we got in the teaser PV were incredible. We know that the anime is slated for 4 episodes but we have no clue about the release date.

My Thoughts

I feel like the anime has been delayed so much because they want to take their time with it. And that is completely fair. As I mentioned, it is very difficult to preserve the inherent spookiness of Junji Itou’s art in animation. So it is going to take a while to get things right. Adult Swim and Toonami recently won us over with the awesome Ninja Kamui, so I am going to trust them on this one as well. I hope that we get to see Uzumaki this year at least. Even if it is at the tail end of the year.

That is all for now!

So yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. Uzumaki anime has the potential to be a masterpiece and I hope it achieves that status. With that said, I will take my leave here, off to play some more Hellblade. See ya!
