Vinand Saga Season 2 – First Impressions

Mappa has 2 anime airing this season. While the other one isn’t anything special, this one is one of the most anticipated sequels of this year. This is where in my opinion, the story of Farmland Saga truly begins. It is a complete tonal shift from the last season and you will continue to see this shift throughout Vinland Saga Season 2. The prologue is over, this is where the journey truly begins.

So welcome back to another one of my “First Impressions” articles! Today we are talking about the much-awaited Vinland Saga Season 2. This time, the anime is being made by Mapp. Instead of Wit Studio like season 1. Pretty sure they are busy with Spy x Family content right now. given that it has a 2nd seasonΒ andΒ a movie coming up. Anyway, though, you know what you are here for. Let’s jump right into it!

What do I think of Vinland Saga Season 2 so far?

Only episode 1 is out at the time of writing so all my comments will be based on it. The series picks up a few years after season 1. And we follow a completely new character. Yes, you won’t see Thorfinn till the very end of the episode. We follow Einar and how he ended up as a slave, his backstory, and everything. And of course, we see how he ends up meeting Thorfinn at the end of the episode. Also, the opening scene of the episode really reminds of that one Elden Ring trailer from a while ago.

As expected from Mappa, the episode was really well-directed. I love how they picked particular parts of the manga and arranged them in a particular way to make the episode more dramatic. They skipped around certain sections too, totally fine cause nothing of importance was omitted. I found the episode well worth the watch even though I’ve read this arc in the manga 2 or 3 times now. And of course, the animations were really good as well. There is nothing much to animate right now, but the animations looked really good, as typical of Mappa.

Oh and the opening theme too, was amazing. The animations for it were amazing, kind of reminded me of the Vikings TV series opening, fittingly enough but it is very different. The vibes of the art, combined with the song hit hard. Kind of fitting for this season to have an opening like that in my opinion, because there won’t be much action for a while now.

Conclusion

As things stand right now, purely based on episode 1, I give Vinland Saga Season 2 a 9/10. This is a preliminary rating, may change down the season of course. I am excited to see more episodes for sure even though I know the story because this arc has a lot of character development. I want to see how the directors at Mappa handle it cause the first episode was really well done.

That is it for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments below! I’d love to hear the thoughts of anime-onlies because I bet this was a pretty big shock to them. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
