Vinland Saga S2, Mid-Season Review!

Key Takeaways from Vinland Saga S2 mid-season review:

  • My Thoughts on the season so far
  • Why you should watch it

Vinland Saga Season 2 has been a joy so far. It is so different from season 1 and yet, it retains so much of the tension from it. Even though we are not on battlefields anymore, the tension never leaves the series. It is this tension that makes this anime so good. I’ll be honest, I was a little skeptical that Mappa may botch something but, so far, they’ve got this arc down perfectly.

So welcome back to another one of my mid-season reviews. Today we are talking about Vinland Saga S2. Yes, mid-season review because the anime is 24 episodes long. Mappa is weird man, they seriously have the balls to make 24 episodes for Vinland Saga while they work on AoT. Well, this article is not to shit on them though. So let’s talk about the anime itself.

What do I think of Vinland Saga S2 so far?

Right off the bat man, this season is amazing. I know people love to call stuff overrated these days but no, this season is amazing. Now, you may like the fight-oriented first season more, but man, you have to appreciate what the anime achieved in this season. Everything seems fine but deep down, you know that the shit will eventually hit the storm. It is very difficult to create an atmosphere this tense in peaceful times.

The biggest draw of the Vinland Saga season 2 is Thorfinn’s character development. Gone is the kid who single-mindedly focused on revenge, there is just a broken man who has given up on all hope on living now, he just existed.Β  Meeting with Eina though, changed him once again. He saw how optimistic Einar was about everything despite their situation. That optimism rubbed off on him a little and thanks to Einar, Thorfinn got back his will to live.

Canute… This guy appeared for just 1 episode but shook up everything.

Everything in this season from Einar’s backstory to the way the daily lives of the slaves are shown is really good. The child getting with the wooden baton for example from the latest episode, that whole scene was actually terrifying. And of course, Mappa being Mappa, the animations and soundtracks are exceptionally well done. The anime feels way more cinematic than the manga and I think that really fits in well with this arc. Mappa firing on all cylinders man, honestly, it feels really good to see.

Conclusion

As things stand, Vinland Saga S2 gets an easy 9/10. Yes, that number may change as the season progresses but, I think it is more like that it will become a 10 at this rate instead of going down to 8. But again, that’s just my opinion as of now and I really can’t find anything to complain about in this anime.
