Wandering Witch, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Key poins for Anime Recommendation – Wandering Witch
- Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina surprises viewers with its seemingly innocent exterior, delivering a fun and slow journey before delving into dark and unexpected plot twists.
- The anime’s strength lies in its excellent world-building, featuring diverse landscapes, cities, and bizarre elements that contribute to the charm of this fantasy series.
- Protagonist Elaina’s well-developed character and her interactions with entertaining side characters create a dynamic and engaging narrative, making Wandering Witch a must-watch for fantasy anime enthusiasts.
The recent few episodes of Frieren really made me want to go back and rewatch this anime. And it is surprising how twisted this show is at times for something that looks so innocent on the surface. Well, I guess Frieren isn’t much different from Wandering Witch in that regard.
Both show promise a “fun” and slow journey before punching you in the gut with some dark stuff. This anime is a little more on the funnier side but it still has some really good plot elements and it is worth watching if you like this sub-genre of fantasy anime.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina. So let’s get started.
Introduction
Wandering Witch is based on the LN of the same name by Shiraishi Jougi and illustrated by Azure. The LN has been serialized since April 2016 and is still ongoing. As for the anime, it only has 1 season of 12 episodes made by C2C Studio and no confirmed second season yet. The first season came out in the Fall season of 2020.
Plot
The titular Elaina had always been interested in going on an adventure because of all the stories she read. The stories of the Witch, Nike interested her in particular. So she works hard and becomes a full-fledged Witch to set on an adventure of her own, getting to experience all things in the world for herself and writing her own tale.
It is a very simple plot and yet it manages to be fun because of how well the world of this anime is brought out. We see cities, deep forests, plants that absorb humans, you name it. The series is mostly episodic in nature with a few short arcs here and there but it is mostly about showcasing this weird fantasy world the author has created and how our MC interacts with it. It is a journey anime in the truest sense.
Characters
Elaina’s character is really well done. Her responses to different situations and how she learns from them are always interesting to see. She knows when things are beyond her and her actions won’t accomplish anything. She also gets decent character development throughout the series. Combined with entertaining recurring side characters like Saya, Mina, Sheila, Elaina’s mother, etc. add a very interesting dynamic to the series.
Animations and Soundtracks
The animations are nothing to write home about or anything but they are good enough. They do a decent job of showcasing this weird fantasy world the author has created. Same with the soundtrack, gets the job done but nothing too memorable or anything like that.
Why should you watch Wandering Witch?
