Was the attack on Titan Ending really THAT Bad?

It has been over four years since the Attack on Titan manga concluded. Crazy, right? Yeah, that’s right, if you don’t remember, the Attack on Titan manga finished all the way back in April 2021. We all know that the initial reception to the Attack on Titan ending was… well, cold to say the least. But the thing is, we have had a whole string of terrible manga endings since then: Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, and Oshi no Ko, just to name a few. So how does the AoT ending compare to these?
And look, I am not going to be part of some revisionist history that the “Attack on Titan ending was always good” or something. I am here to tell you what I thought when this ending came out and my thoughts on it haven’t really changed even after all these terrible endings. So let’s get into it.
The Attack on Titan Ending…
Is it worse than MHA, Oshi no Ko or Jujutsu Kaisen ending? Hell no, if you ask me, the endings of MHA, Oshi no Ko, and Jujutsu Kaisen were much, much worse than Attacks on Titan. And why is that? Because the ending itself of AoT was fine, it was a suitable enough conclusion to the story outside of the weird bird stuff with Mikasa and all. BUT, a lot of people including me don’t like it because it feels a little abrupt and the manga just ends without really closing out a whole bunch of loose ends.
The major problem with the MHA, Oshi no Ko, and Jujutsu Kaisen endings was that these endings simply don’t fit the story. Aqua didn’t need to die in Oshi no Ko, 2 chapters before the last; the last 100 or so chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen are just a huge stinking mess and, MHA ended exactly the way it began without any closure for Deku. And this is not me defending the AoT ending, by the way, I still think that AoT’s ending is bad. It’s just the others are even worse than AoT.
It feels insulting when a manga you have been following for years concludes in such an underwhelming way. Among the 4 mangas I have chosen to highlight today, I really do think the Oshi no Ko is the worst offender of them all. Sim[ly because Oshi no Ko had a very obvious good ending in sight, instead of taking that, Akasaka did something crazy and because of that, we now have this shitshow of an ending to an otherwise amazing manga. But all of them have different flavors of stink, even if AoT stinks less, I won’t claim that it doesn’t stink at all.

Those were my thoughts on the Attack on Titan manga ending 4 years later. Crazy how it was AoT that started the recent trend of bad endings. Now whenever a major manga ends, everyone just expects the ending to be garbage. And that’s really a shame, that’s why I made an article last week highlighting two of my favorite endings of all time.
