Whisper Me a Love Song Review: Production Issues Galore

Article at a glance:
- Severe production problems, including inconsistent animation and airing schedule issues, negatively impacted the overall enjoyment of the anime.
- While most characters, like Yori and Himari, are well-developed and enjoyable, Shiho’s impulsive and irrational behavior detracts significantly from the experience.
- Despite having good moments, the anime suffers from inconsistent animation quality, making it difficult to fully appreciate the good aspects like its soundtrack and certain character dynamics.

I usually don’t like bringing up production issues in a review. As Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 proved, an anime with severe production issues can still be good. That doesn’t mean that I support the work culture at Mappa, that just means that when I review something, I tend to focus on the product itself. But I am bringing up production issues in my review of Whisper Me a Love song because the production issues spoiled a lot of the enjoyment of this anime.
From inconsistent animations to airing schedule issues, the production problems have really affected this anime negatively. It is going to be hard to keep my thoughts together on this one. Even now my mind is all over the place. Because there are certain parts I enjoy and there are certain parts I hate. So welcome to my review for Whisper Me a Love Song and let’s just get started.

Plot
Not much to say here, it is a romance anime, what do you expect the plot to be like? Still, though, there is a lot of drama involved in the plot of this anime. And while some of it is good, some of it feels forced. And I will talk about this further when I get to talking about Shiho’s character. The story starts off like a regular romance, then it gets interesting in the middle, and then… I don’t even know what to say. To me, the last few episodes have been eye-roll-inducing. I have a good idea of where episode 12 will land so hopefully episodes 11 and 12 will be good.
Whenever those two episodes come out that is. Because as I mentioned, the production issues affected the airing schedule and now we have no idea of when we will get episodes 11 and 12.
Characters
Let me get Shiho out of the way first. To me, her character makes no sense. She just comes off as crazy and impulsive. Sure, I understand that there was one thing she thought she was good at and it was taken away from her. That part, I understand. But why didn’t she just talk it out? Back when she was still playing violin, she was a child. But even after reaching high school, she never talked about her problems with someone. That is nuts. And then given how she treats people who are not Yori or Aki, it makes her seem even more childish, if not outright crazy.

Aside from her though, I like the characters in the show. Yori and Himari form a good dynamic, I wish their relationship got more time compared to all the Shiho drama. But I think the last two episodes will help with that. Aki and Yori’s friendship and the “mutual respect” Himari and Aki gain for each other are all pretty well-done dynamics. Seriously other than Shiho, the show is filled with likeable characters whose conversations and dynamics I enjoy.
Animations and Soundtracks
Here comes the hard part. See, the animation of the show is a representation of how I feel about this anime. Sometimes, it is really good and at other times, it feels like a sideshow. While the soundtrack is good because there are a lot of good songs in this anime, the animations are an inconsistent mess. Episode 1 had amazing animations and then a few episodes have those Microsoft PowerPoint-looking transitions, I didn’t call them slideshow for no reason.
Summing Up
Here are my final review scores for Whisper Me a Love Song:
- Plot – 6/10
- Characters – 7/10 (Would’ve been 8/10 easily if Shiho was written better)
- Animations – 6/10 (very hard to score)
- Soundtracks – 8/10
- Enjoyment – 7/10
- Overall – 6/10
There were certain aspects of this anime I enjoyed a lot, trust me. But given all the issues, I can’t give it a better score in good conscious as a critic. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
