Why Berserk is so Hard to Adapt?

Article at a glance:

  • Berserk’s legendary status hasn’t saved it from bad anime adaptations—so why is it so damn hard to get right?
  • Miura’s insane art style and the sky-high fan expectations make adapting Berserk a nightmare for any studio.
  • Between the mature themes, budget risks, and niche appeal, most studios just won’t touch it—but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Man, I love this design so much.

You know, I think we can all agree how crazy it is that despite its legendary status, Berkserk really doesn’t have a good anime adaptation. I have always wondered why Berserk’s anime adaptations tend to struggle so much. The result of that thinking is in this article. So why is Berserk just so hard to adapt into an anime? Well, as with all things, there are multiple reasons for this and I intend to do my best to go over them.

So welcome back to another article. I am not even sure what to call this article but we are once again talking about Berserk. More specifically, today I want to look at why Berserk is just too damn hard to adapt. I don’t have a “script” for this article so we will see how it goes lol, let’s get started.

Just why is Berserk so damn Hard to adapt?

First thing first, one of the biggest reasons why this manga is so hard to adapt is that it is just simply impossible to live up to the massive expectations the anime will inevitably have to carry. Secondly, Kentarou Miura’s gritty art style is notoriously hard to recreate. And if the art style is not the same, the anime just won’t hit the same. So the anime has to take that crazy manga art style, make it feasible to animate, and transition it into color without losing its identity, You see why that is a problem to adapt lol?

Now, I am not saying that it is impossible to adapt, after all, Dune got adapted into two masterpiece movies. Dune was once considered unadaptable as well. And the movies found a way to tear down Dune without taking away its meaning. The original Dune books are very heavy. We need something similar for Berserk. This brings me to my next point, Berserk WILL have to be an adult-rated anime. It HAS to be because of the events and themes the story focuses on.

Griffith, I don't forgive this man.
GRIFIIITH!!

But this raises an issue, most mainstream animation studios will stay away from an adult-rated show. And even if someone did all that and had an insane budget to put into the Berserk anime, they still have to make a profit. Now while the Berserk fan base is big, is it big enough to recover whatever budget the studio put into the adaptation? Probably not. Again, not impossible, just extremely unlikely and probably not worth the risk in the company’s eyes, right?

That is all for now

To reiterate, I am not saying that Berserk is totally impossible to adapt. It is doable, just that it will be a very long-winded and complicated process for the studio. And it is just not one reason that makes Berserk hard to adapt, it’s a combination of all of these factors. Still, I will always continue to hold out hope for a good Berserk adaptation in the future. We can get one for Dune, we can get one for Berserk too, like come on man. But yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
