Wistoria Season 2 Review - Best Shonen Fun I've Had in a While

Wistoria Season 2 peaks early, the first four episodes hit the hardest, narrative-wise, almost like they were originally meant to close out Season 1.
The pacing gets a little weird after that climax, but the back half still delivers, especially with Will and Elfaria’s backstory and some solid world-building around the Tower.
Even with the pacing hiccups, it’s all gas, no brakes, the production, characters, and just plain fun factor keep it a blast to watch week to week.

Wistoria Season 2 peaks pretty early; the best episodes, narrative-wise, are the first four. I am pretty sure they wanted to make Episode 4 the finale for Season 1. Does that mean that the rest of Season 2 is bad? No, not by far, it is still a lot of fun. Heck, we just had one of the best fights of the series in Season 2, Episode 11, like last week. But it does feel weird seeing such escalation in stakes early on, with the rest of the season being pretty chill. So yeah, despite all the fun I had, Wistoria Season 2 is a complicated season to review.

It does feel like they’re stretching things a little towards the final episodes. But even then, I had a blast watching Wistoria Season 2; it was all gas, no brakes. And yep, the visuals certainly do help in conveying just how fun the anime is to watch.

So yeah, welcome back to another review, and today we are talking about Wistoria Wand and Sword Season 2! There will be spoilers ahead, of course, since there is some important stuff I want to touch on. So let’s get started.

Plot

As I said, the narrative escalation and subsequent climax for Wistoria Season 2 are pretty early on. Episode 5 really does feel like an epilogue when you watch this anime week by week. So the stakes go down a lot for a couple of episodes before things pick back up with the Second Bloom stuff. Even if you know nothing about story structure, you will feel this weirdness in the pacing. I can’t fully fault the anime for this, of course. But it does feel weird.

Even if the 2nd half of Season 2 doesn’t have the same narrative tension as the first half, in isolation, it is still a pretty good arc. Even if it is a little slow at times. The arc does a great job of showing us Will and Elfaria’s backstory and, of course, giving more character to Julius. The second half also does a good job of exploring just how biased and restrictive the mage society truly is. And you know, the Tower is not this amazing place everyone thinks it is, so I do like that aspect; it contributes a lot to the world-building.

All that said, though, there isn’t really anything too insane that you won’t see coming or anything. It is still very much a Shonen-like plot, more focused on the action and characters than an insanely deep story or something. But it is still more than serviceable.

Characters

Will and Elfie

Will and Elfie have to be the highlight of this season, by far. Will’s backstory with Elfie was adorable. Their childhood promise is given so much weight. And in Season 1, Eflie comes across as almost cruel for making Will go through so much. But in Season 2, it is way more obvious that she might be a little too obsessed with Will lol. She straight up admits her undying love for Will in public and even goes as far as calling him her bride lol. I really like how much more human Elfie feels in Season 2.

Will didn’t change THAT much as a character, but we get a lot more background on him in this Season. And of course, the relationship and interactions with Elfie help a lot in fleshing out his character a little more, even without direct character development.

The Others

I think Julius and Sion got the most development outside of the main couple. Julius’s backstory was great; it made sense why he turned out to be such a tsundere. Cerridwen was a decent addition, and Flin being involved was much appreciated. All that said, I think the most we’re going to see of a new character is going to be Zeo. He had an amazing showing in both Episodes 11 and 12. I really look forward to seeing more of him. He’s loud, he’s strong, and he’s very damn entertaining.

Production

Once again, we are at this part of the review, and to no one’s surprise, Wistoria Season 2 looks amazing. The animations, the soundtracks, the sound effects, and even the voice acting, everything in the production is really damn good. I absolutely loved the new opening theme. Believers. I love how it starts with a young Elfie just dragging Will around. And of course, the fights look fantastic. Be it Will’s fight against the Mage Killer in Episode 4 or Elfie vs. Zeo in Episode 11, the animation looks awesome. Every single fight is a fun time. If you thought Season 1 looked good, Season 2 is even more impressive.

So, as the scores suggest, despite the weird plot issues, the characters, production, and enjoyment remain strong points of Wistoria Season 2.
