Wotakoi, Manga Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:
- Wotakoi’s romance feels genuine, with characters whose relationships develop naturally. The playful dynamic between the main couple, Narumi and Nifuji, is a highlight, creating a wholesome and entertaining experience.
- The manga thrives on its small yet tightly connected cast, with strong character development and engaging interactions, particularly between the two otaku couples—Narumi & Nifuji and Koyonagi & Kabakura.
- While the art isn’t flashy, it perfectly complements the lighthearted tone of the series, enhancing the overall charm of the story with its cute and memorable character designs.

I don’t why but I always find myself coming back to this manga. There’s just something about the way Wotakoi tackles romance and relationships that makes this manga special for so many people. I’ve never been in a relationship so I can’t say for certain but the romance here feels very natural. The character writing is great and the character dynamics always manage to be engaging and entertaining. If you are looking for a sweet and wholesome romance manga, well, you’ve come to the right place.
So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series and this week we are talking about Wotakoi. This has to be among my favorite romance mangas of all time so let’s just talk about it!

Introduction
Wotakoi manga is written and illustrated by Fujita. It was serialized from April 2015 to July 2021 in the Comic POOL magazine. Funnily enough, the manga first started on Pixiv in 2014 before it started proper serialization in Comic POOL. The manga is quite short, coming in at just 105 chapters compiled into 11 volumes. There is a pretty good anime adaptation of the manga by A1 Pictures. It doesn’t cover the whole manga but is pretty solid so you can check that out if you wish.
Plot
As with most SOL/romance mangas, the plot is quite simple. Narumi recently broke up because of her otaku interests and left her old job, joining a new company. She decides to hide her hobbies as much as she can this time around to finally have a stable relationship. But well, her old friend who is also an otaku, Nifuji works at this new company. Soon enough they rekindle their old friendship and eventually go on to form a relationship. That’s not all, they also find out that two of their seniors are otakus as well so they have a nice group.

Not much to say here. The plot is well-paced, the setting provides for some hilarious moments and it gives way to some great character arcs. As you may have guessed from the short chapter count, the manga doesn’t drag on at all.
Characters
I love Nifuji and Narumi’s relationship. Often times they seem more like best friends rather than a couple because of how much they joke around, and I love that. Their shenanigans are always fun, they’re just so easygoing with each other, and it is a lot of fun to read. Again, that’s not all though. Because the older couple of Koyonagi and Kabakura is equally fun. They are a lot more melodramatic than Narumi and Nifuji but I love their dynamic as well.
And of course, the way the whole group comes together is just perfect. Some of the best moments of the manga take place when all four of them are together. All of the main cast members get a good amount of character development as well on top of having top-tier dynamics. Yeah, the cast may be small but it is so tightly knit that you just have to love it.

Art
The art style is really cute. I love the character designs, they’re instantly recognizable and stay in your memory. Yes, the art style might not be super crazy but I still love it for what it is and it fits the tone of the series perfectly. Again, I think that art is cute and I love all the silly things the author does with the art at times, which adds to the charm.
Summing Up
Here’s why you should read the Wotakoi Manga:
- Amazing characters
- Sweet and wholesome
- Great character dynamics
- Good art
That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Check out this week’s anime recommendation here and I will take my leave here! See ya!
