You and I Are Polar Opposites Review – Flawed But Sweet

Article at a glance:

  • You and I are Polar Opposites is a genuinely fun watch, every episode delivers consistent laughs, a natural group dynamic, and a supporting cast that honestly steals the show at times.
  • The side characters are the real highlight, pairs like Nishi & Yamada and Azu & Taira get surprisingly deep development, sometimes outshining the main couple themselves.
  • The one gripe? Suzuki and Tani needed just a little more, they do grow, but in 12 episodes, the leads got slightly shortchanged compared to everyone around them.

Alright, I know I took my sweet time, but I wanted to do this anime justice. I really had to think about how I wanted to review You, and I are Polar Opposites. Don’t get me wrong, this anime was a blast all the way through. Every episode had me howling with laughter. The characters in general were pretty well done, especially the supporting cast, which was great. My main issue with the anime has to be the fact that the main couple didn’t get as much growth as I would’ve liked. They DID grow, but it wasn’t enough, at least, in my opinion.

So this will be an interesting review. So yeah, welcome back to another review, and today we are talking about You, and I are Polar Oppossites. Let’s get started.

Plot

I won’t waste much time here. The plot is pretty bare bones, as it is a very character-driven story. But at least the plot didn’t introduce any unnecessary drama into the story, and the pacing remained consistent. Other than that, the plot has pretty much every romance anime-type arc you can think of. So pretty standard affair here, nothing offensive but nothing that stands out either. Decent writing overall, and I really have to compliment the pacing here.

So let’s move on to the meat of this review

Characters

In short, the character work in You, and I are Polar Opoosites is amazing. The group dynamic between the main cast is so natural and fun to watch. Most of the comedy in the show just comes from the friends messing around. On top of that, our important side characters like Azu, Taira, Yamada, and Nishi get a lot of character development as well. At times, the Nishi and Yamada pairing is even more interesting than the Suzuki and Tani pairing. Yamada himself doesn’t change much. I think it is awesome how Nishi slowly starts coming out of her shell thanks to him.

Azu and Taira have a lot of baggage from the past, and throughout the course of the show, they learn to leave things behind and start relying more on their current friends. And I think all of us get the feeling that they’ll likely develop into a couple as well if the anime ever gets a sequel. If you’ve read the manga, let me know lol.

Moving on to the main couple, Suzuki and Tani. Both of them DO grow as a couple. It is really sweet seeing them get more comfortable touching each other and calling each other by their first names when they’re alone. I liked that Suzuki had a mini character arc right in the first episode. I really like how Yusuke gets nervous, too, despite appearing calm on the surface. It’s just that I feel like we could’ve done just a little more with the two in the span of 12 episodes.

This may sound nitpicky, but the side characters had more growth than these two, and that’s just a little…sad. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Suzuki and Tani pair is well done, just that I wanted a little more, especially given how well paced the first episode was.

Production

The anime looks amazing. The animations are so bright and colorful. I absolutely love how they effortlessly transition to 2D chibi art just to nail those comedy scenes. And even in that, they do so much with different art styles they use just for the bit. Suzuki is a VERY expressive person, and I absolutely love to watch how the animation style shifts to reflect her emotions.

And the soundtracks and voice acting are pretty good as well. So absolutely no complaints in terms of the production. Good animations, good soundtracks, and good voice acting.

Summing Up

Here are my final review scores for You and I are Polar Opposites

  • Plot – 7/10
  • Characters – 9/10
  • Production – 8/10
  • Enjoyment – 10/10
  • Overall – 8.5/10

So yeah, as you can see, not a bad anime at all. In fact, You and I are Polar Opposites was really damn fun. It is just that as a critic, I have to be strict with the shows I like too. But yeah, that concludes my review of You and I are Polar Opposites. That is all for now. I will take my leave here. I am VERY sleepy. See ya!
