Yuri on the Ice Movie Cancelled…

Key points for Yuri on the Ice Movie Cancellation news:

  • The cancellation of the Yuri on Ice movie after 7 years of anticipation leaves fans disheartened, with Mappa’s vague apology failing to provide clarity on the reasons behind the decision.
  • Mappa’s extensive workload, evident from staff breakdowns during Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, likely contributed to the cancellation, with numerous ongoing projects including high-profile releases like Lazarus and Chainsaw Man: Reze-arc.
  • While workload stands out as a primary factor, other issues such as waning interest and creative challenges may have collectively led to the demise of the Yuri on Ice movie, underscoring the complexities of anime production and the rarity of cancellations within the industry.

Man, this hurts to see. Project cancellations are never a good thing, no matter what media you are talking about. Usually, a cancelation means that all the work poured into the said project will go to waste and it was all for nothing. The longer the cancelation is delayed, the more work is wasted. In this case, the Yuri on Ice movie was announced 7 years ago. Yeah, let that sink in.

I know that this news came out yesterday but I wanted to see if there are any more statements from Mappa regarding this, So I waited for a bit longer. And it doesn’t look like they plan on explaining themselves further. If I am being honest though, I am not surprised. I mean, it is Mappa we are talking about. You know how they roll. Well anyway, let’s talk about their statement on the Yuri on the Ice movie first, we can get into all that afterward.

Mappa’s Statement on the Cancelation of Yuri on the Ice Movie

You can read the whole notice for yourself but it is essentially informing people about the cancelation and apologizing to people looking forward to the movie. The original air date of the movie was supposed to be in 2019 but has been delayed significantly since then and now we get this. I find it interesting that they didn’t provide a clear reason in this notice. But since it is Mappa we are talking about here, we can imagine the reasons for the cancelation…

Why was the movie canned?

This is all speculative, of course. In reality, I am sure that the cancelation is a combination of multiple factors. After all, the movie was announced all the way back in 2017. So it is clear that it spent a significant time in development hell.

But I think that the biggest reason for the cancellation is just how busy Mappa has been for the last few years, We all know the infamous staff breakdowns on Twitter during Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 last year. Well, their schedule isn’t much different this year, either. We have Bucchigiri and Oblivion Battery this year. And 5 other anime in production including high-profile projects like Shuichiro Watanabe’s Lazarus and Jujutsu Kaisen: Culing Game. A few of these may as well come out within this year.

They also have 2 movies in production, the Zombie Land Saga project and Chainsaw Man: Reze-arc. So I think it is pretty easy to see why workload might have been one the major causes of cancelation. Other causes could include a variety of issues from a lack of interest to a lack of creative vision/direction. And again, as I said, I am certain that it is most definitely a combination of various issues instead of one big issue causing the production to fall apart.

Screw, Mappa. Seriously.

That is all for now!

So yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. It never feels good to report on project cancellation, thankfully this doesn’t happen often when it comes to anime but it still hurts to see. That is all I’ve got about the Yuri on the Ice movie so far. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
