Zenshu: Mappa Produces New Original Anime

Key points for Zenshu news:

  • “Zenshu” boasts a talented cast including Anna Nagase and Kazuki Ura, with direction by Mitsue Yamazaki. Despite concerns about Mappa’s track record, the lineup suggests potential.
  • Following protagonist Natsuko Hirose’s journey into the anime industry, “Zenshu” promises a blend of success and struggle, particularly as Hirose faces challenges in developing a rom-com due to her lack of romantic experience.
  • While the teaser showcases captivating visuals and music, skepticism lingers regarding Mappa’s portrayal of the industry. Despite the potential for a compelling narrative, concerns persist about romanticizing the harsh realities of animation production.

So spoiler: Zenshu is about a high school graduate getting into the anime industry and becoming an animator. I can only guess what tone the anime will be going for based on the trailer and official synopsis. But it is ironic that Mappa of all studios is making an original anime on a story like this. Seriously, Mappa? Probably the most infamous studio for bad working conditions, making an original anime about someone getting into the industry? You can’t make this up, the jokes write themselves.

Yeah, remember the absolute meltdown the studio staff members were having during the production of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2? I am honestly surprised JJK Season 2 was even completed at all.

Ok, I am getting side-tracked now. We are not here to talk about JJK Season 2, I have covered that enough. Welcome to another news article and today I’d like to talk about Zenshu. Despite all my gripes with Mappa, this anime actually does look pretty promising. So let’s get started.

What do we know about Zenshu?

Well, quite a lot actually. The official website of the anime revealed a whole bunch of details. We know that Anna Nagase, Kazuki Ura, Rie Kugiyama, Minori Suzuki, and Akio Suyama will be starring as the main cast of the show. The original work is credited to Mitsue Yamazaki, Kimiko Ueno, and of course, Mappa. The series will be directed by Mitsue Yamazaki. And yes, as far as I know, this series is confirmed to be a full-fledged TV anime, not a movie or an OVA or something like that.

As for the synopsis, the plot will follow Natsuko Hirose, a high-school graduate who wants to become an animator. She quickly debuts as a director and her first anime is very successful. Her next anime is scheduled to be a rom-com about first love. But she isn’t experienced in love so the production comes to a halt because she can’t figure out a storyboard for the anime. You can check out the teaser for it here!

My Thoughts

I am of two minds about this. On the one hand, I do think that this anime will be good. Even just going off the teaser, the visuals and the music are a vibe and it could be really fun to watch something like this. On the other hand, I could be a cynic and say Mappa is doing this to romanticize the hell out of a harsh industry. I am usually not that cynical but it is Mappa we are talking about so…

That is all for now

Yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. Again, I do think that in a vacuum, this will be a good anime. But it is hard to ignore the circumstances surrounding it. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
