Seriously, Go Watch Demon Lord 2099

Article at a glance:

  • Demon Lord 2099 blends technology and magic seamlessly, creating an engaging, futuristic Shibuya, though its exposition can feel clunky.
  • A 1,000-year-old Demon Lord becomes a streamer playing Dark Souls and Bloodborne to regain his power, offering entertaining and quirky character interactions.
  • The anime suffers from inconsistent animation quality and over-reliance on exposition, but its charm and creativity make it worth a watch.

Yeah, I mean that title very seriously. Demon Lord 2099 has been surprisingly fun. Don’t go into the anime expecting a 5-star meal and you will enjoy it. It is the definition of junk food entertainment and it is very enjoyable in that regard. Yes, it does have its flaws but I think the world it has built and what it is going for is interesting enough to at least give it a chance. And if you do, it may just catch you off-guard, like it did with me. There are certain things that this anime does well and I do believe those are worth talking about.

So welcome back to another mid-season review today we are talking about Demon Lord 2099. The fall season has been coming around beautifully and we only have like 5 or so weeks to go before the massive review rush lol. Let’s get started!

What do I think of Demon Lord 2099 so far?

So let’s start with the positives. The world-building in this anime is great. It blends technology and magic really well. It does a great job of making you feel just how old Veltol really is in this modern age. I wish that the exposition on the world-building was done in a smoother way, but the overall story of the world is quite interesting. The version of Shibuya they have in this anime is also visually very pleasing. Had this gotten a better animation budget, it would’ve been one of the best-looking anime settings, in my opinion. But it still does look really cool.

The plot itself is also kind of hilarious. Veltol needs the faith of people to regain his former strength and he can’t get a job in this modern day because he is incompatible with Familia, a piece of tech every job requires. So he starts streaming. Yes, a Demon Lord who is like a thousand years old becomes a streamer. And do you know what games he plays? Dark Souls and Bloodborne. You can’t make this up. Aside from that, the characters in this show are also pretty good with some great interactions. I hope that the anime expands more on the main characters in the future.

Now for the criticisms, you may have already spotted them. I have two major criticisms: the animations and contrivances/exposition. Aside from that, the tonal inconsistency is also an issue but that’s minor. The animations look downright goofy at times. That’s a shame too because this anime has a lot of cool scenes. But the writing relies a bit too heavily on exposition dumps and contrivances. It is a bit mind-numbing at times, I really wish that was handled a bit better.

That is all for now

But yeah, that is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Demon Lord 2099 is quite fun and you should at least give it a chance. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
