Silent Witch Anime Review – A Must Watch

Article at a glance:

  • Secrets of the Silent Witch came out of nowhere for me, but it’s easily turning into one of the most enjoyable shows of the season.
  • The mix of fantasy, comedy, and heartfelt character moments makes it way more engaging than I expected.
  • While not perfect, the strong pacing, great visuals, and lovable protagonist make this anime a must-watch.

Secrets of the Silent Witch has to be the “surprise” anime of the season for me. I knew nothing about this series going in; I wasn’t even planning on watching it. But a friend’s recommendation got me to this show, and I am glad I gave it a chance. Yes, the title is not misleading; I truly believe that the Silent Witch anime is a must-watch, and that comment alone should set the tone for this review.

So welcome back to another anime review, and today we are talking about The Secrets of the Silent Witch. The review will be completely spoiler-free. I know that I am writing this a little early since the anime is scheduled for 13 episodes, and all, but we just had 2 really good episodes, so I figured this would be a good time. We could do a plot breakdown article later if need be. But let’s get started with the review first.

Plot

The story is set in a typical medieval fantasy world. There is a faction called The Seven Sages, consisting of the strongest mages the world has ever seen. Our protagonist is one of the Seven Sages, The Silent Witch. As her name suggests, she is the only human in the world capable of using magic without a chant. She is a massive introvert, and well, she is tasked with blending into a school and protecting the 2nd Prince of the Kingdom. The plot is a perfect blend of serious storytelling, slice of life, comedy, and heartfelt character moments.

I won’t lie, there are a few plot holes here and there, and yeah, the plot does rely on contrivance at times to carry itself forward. The dialog can also be overly expository at times. But overall, the story is really well-paced, it is compelling and most importantly, it understands wth weight of the serious plot developments. Certain plot twists will genuinely catch you off guard. Seriously, the plot is much better than whatever you have in mind.

Characters

Monica is a great protagonist. Her character arc is simple, but it’s compelling, and the story just makes you root for her even more. Despite her insane talent in magic, the plot always comes up with a nice way to challenge her in other things. Like the latest episodes focused on Monica coming to terms with the fact that her job requires her to make some hard decisions.

That said, I wish that the side characters had some development, too. Pretty much every side character exists to facilitate Moinca’s development, which is not bad, but I wish the side characters were a bit more interesting outside of plot reasons.

Animations and Soundtracks

Studio Gokumi went pretty hard on the visuals for this anime, bro. Every single scene where Moica is using magic looks so damn good. I really like the overall vibe and character designs of this anime as well. The soundtracks are decent as well, nothing too amazing, but the opening and ending themes are good.

Summing Up

Here are my final review scores for the Silent Witch anime:

  • Plot – 8/10
  • Characters – 7/10
  • Animations – 8/10
  • Soundtracks – 7/10
  • Enjoyment – 10/10
  • Overall – 8/10

And well, that is all for now. Once again, I highly recommend checking out this anime. I loved every moment of it, and I look forward to the future episodes. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
