Misfit of the Demon King Academy: Anime Recommendation of the Week

Yeah, let’s talk about it this week. I’ve been hearing a lot of people shit on this anime only because it got a second season confirmed. Now I won’t say that Misfit of the Demon King Academy is the most sequel-deserving anime out there. But come on man, this is a great anime regardless. This anime is the perfect example of how you can take cliches and still manage to make a memorable series out of them. I’ve watched almost 500 anime at this point and very few of them manage to be as memorable as this.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Misfit of the Demon King Academy. I really like this series and there’s only one thing I’d like to say for the haters, Anos Voldigoad is inevitable. You can’t escape him. So let’s start right away.

Introduction

Misfit of the Demon Kind Academy is based on the LN of the same name written by Shuu and illustrated by Shizuma Yoshinori. The LN started serialization back in May 2018 and is still ongoing. The anime adaption only has 13 episodes as of now with a second season confirmed. The anime aired in the summer 2020 season and it is made by Silver Link studios.

As I said earlier, Misfit of the Demon King Academy is a perfect example of how a cliche plot can be molded into a very enjoyable experience. I won’t pretend that this anime does not use cliche plot devices and concepts. I if describe it in words it will probably sound boring but this is one of the most rewatchable fantasy animes I’ve seen.

Plot

Misfit of the Demon King Academy follows Anos Voldigoad, the demon king who is reincarnated into the present day of his kingdom. There is this whole school dedicated to finding and raising the successor of the Demon King. Out of curiosity, he enrolls in the school and shit just gets complicated from there on. There is a pretty good plot twist at the end of the anime too.

Like I said, if I describe it in words, it is going to sound generic. But, trust me this anime is really entertaining to watch. There is all the stuff you’d expect from a fantasy anime but it is executed really well. It is very rare to see an anime execute stuff as good as Misfit of the Demon King Academy does. And you know, it does have a decent plot twist at the end as well.

Characters

There are not a lot of characters in Misfit of the Demon King Academy but the ones we do have are pretty well written. Anos is a great character, he is very deserving of the title Demon King. He literally has no concept of mercy. The other main characters, Sasha, Misha, and Lay get some really detailed backstories too. Lay’s backstory especially has a lot to do with the plot of the anime.

Animations and Soundtracks

Let me start off by saying, Misfit of the Demon King Academy has an amazing art style. The character designs, the environment designs, and especially the clothing design are amazing. Silver Link went harder on this anime than they needed to. And I am not complaining, it is amazing to look at. The soundtracks while pretty good, aren’t particularly memorable. I still love that opening theme though.
