Too Many Losing Heroines Review : A Must Watch

Article at a glance:
- The anime cleverly reconstructs typical romance tropes, focusing on rejected girls coming to terms with their feelings, offering fresh humor and character-driven storytelling.
- The interactions, especially between Nukumizu and Yanami, drive the plot forward, highlighting emotional maturity and strong development among the cast.
- A1 Pictures delivers excellent animations and fitting soundtracks that enhance the overall experience, with varied and beautifully animated ending themes reflecting each character arc.

I am unsure if I should call this anime a “rom-com” because there is little to no romance. I know there will be some romance stuff in the future but right now, not so much. It is more like a reconstruction of the typical romance tropes in anime. Even before this review, I have made it clear plenty of times that Too Many Losing Heroines is one of my favorites from this season and there are quite a few reasons for that. And again, I will aim to explain why I like this show so much to the best of my ability through this review.
I love how much this show makes fun of the typical romance cliches. It still has some of those but it uses them differently compared to what we are used to seeing. Childhood friends always lose in romance animes is a well-known cliche and well, this anime pretty much has that as its focus lol. Aside from making fun of the typical genre cliches, this show also has a great sense of humor. Many jokes and references are hidden in plain sight and you’ll catch them with subsequent rewatches.
Add that awesome humor with some great character dynamics and development, and you’ve got a thoroughly entertaining show. So welcome to another review and today we are talking about Too Many Losing Heroines. So let’s get started.

Plot
As I said, the show takes the typical genre cliche of “childhood friends always lose in a romance” and runs with it. We do this twice in a row for two main characters. The third time around, it’s not a childhood friend but again, it’s a similar situation about dealing with rejection. So each arc of the show focuses on each rejected girl coming to terms with their feelings. We start with Yanami, then move on to Yakishio, and then finally Komari. Our protagonist, Nukumizu is kinda involved in all these incidents somehow and he helps to the best of his ability.
There isn’t much to the plot aside from that. You can probably guess why the characters in the show are so great. The plot is literally pushed forward by character development. Aside from the character interactions, there are a lot of different ways this show injects humor. Be it random visual gags, episode titles, or sometimes even modified versions of famous quotes. There is no shortage of humor in this show and again, you will miss a lot of it on your first watch. Like for example, the official website of the anime has a damn calorie counter for Yanami by episode lol.

Characters
So let’s split this up into sections
Nukumizu and Yamami
I am putting these two together because Nukumizu gets the most development in Yanami’s arc and because their dynamic is the best part of this show to me. Yanami and Nukumizu’s interactions are always entertaining and the way they become friends over time is so well done. Nukumizu who was a very reserved person also becomes a little more confident over time and goes on to make more friends. This development started because Yanami dragged him along.
As for Yanami, her antics throughout the show are funny as hell. She loves to eat and it is always funny to see how far she’s willing to go for free food. She takes the “rejection” surprisingly well. Yes, she does have issues with it but she comes to terms with it pretty quickly. Despite being a goofball and a glutton at times, she is surprisingly mature emotionally.

Yakishio
Yakishio’s arc introduces us to two great side characters. It takes her a lot longer than Yanami to come to terms with her rejection but she grows so much as a person during her arc. Again, she is very emotionally mature. Her dynamic with both Ayano and Nukumizu is really well done. Once she gets over her rejection, she becomes friends with Chihaya too which I love. I wish we got to see them interact more often cause it feels like they have a great dynamic with Yakishio telling all of Ayano’s embarrassing secrets to Chihaya.
Komari
Komari’s arc is amazing. The person she likes is a third year and will graduate soon so she takes it upon herself to do everything the literature club needs for the School Festival. Through Nukumizu, she learns to rely on her friends during this arc. And it’s not just that she likes Shintarou, it was Shintarou and Koto who made it fun for Komari to come to school. So not being able to see them again at school means a lot to her and that’s why she wants to send them off properly. It is a beautifully written arc and it explores Komari’s character well.

The side characters like Koto, Shintarou, Ayano, Chihaya, and Kaju are great too. They have distinct characters and once again, character interactions among the whole cast make this show so much better.
Animations and Soundtracks
As is the trend with this season, the animations are pretty damn good. A1 Picture did a great job on this anime. Everything from the character designs to the fluidity of things like clothes and hair is so well done. The same goes for the soundtracks. The opening theme is a banger befitting of the light-hearted nature of the show. And the ending themes change depending on whose arc it is and once again, they’re beautifully animated. The songs fit the character the arc is for and the ending themes focus on the more serious, solemn underlying tone of the show. I love it.

Summing up
I think it is pretty clear how much I love this show at this point. So don’t be surprised by my final review scores for Too Many Losing Heroines:
- Plot – 8/10
- Characters – 10/10
- Animations – 9/10
- Soundtracks – 9/10
- Enjoyment – 10/10
- Overall – 9/10
That concludes my review of Too Many Losing Heroines. Again, I love this show so I am a bit biased. Reviewers are humans too, we have our biases. So let me know your thoughts in the comments and I will take my leave here. I am off to watch some more Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. See ya!
