We Need to Talk Aout Fate/Strange Fake Episode 5…

Article at a glance:

  • Fate/strange Fake feels like pure Ryohgo Narita energy: a Holy Grail War that keeps breaking its own rules just to ask “what if?” and somehow makes the chaos work.
  • The war is so abnormal it’s looping back into being self-aware, where exceptions attract more exceptions, and even Gilgamesh ends up feeling like the normal one for once.
  • Episode 5 is peak experimentation, throwing wild concepts like Alcides, Watcher, and Francesca’s nonsense at us to fully justify the title: it is strange, and the Grail War is fake.

Fate/Strange Fake is such a Ryohgo Narita story. I have’t even read that many of his works, but even then, I can TELL what kind of things he likes as an author lol. When he wrote for BLEACH, he focused on expanding the lore with Fate, he’s focusing on bulldozing through every Holy Grail War rule just to ask “what if,” and I absolutely love this approach. Fate/Strange Fake Episode 5 perhaps is the biggest “wtf” moment we’ve had in this anime so far lol. I love how much experimentation there is,

It really does justify the name, doesn’t it? It IS strange, and the Holy Grail war IS fake. Look at me, out here talking like it is JoJo’s BIZZARE Adventure, what am I even doing LOL? Either way, let’s talk about Fate/Strange Fake Episode 5.

Of course, spoilers ahead.

FSF Episode 5 was PEAK Narita Writing

So imagine summoning Heracles, a rather strong Archer as is, and going “Nah, not enough HATE.” So my guy summoned Herc, used ALL THREE of his Command Seals and a bit of the Fuyuki mud to “corrupt” him into Alcides, someone who wants to erase the name “Heracles” from history. An interesting thing is that Bazdilot technically didn’t corrupt Herc; he just reminded Herc of all the suffering he went through at the hands of the Gods and humans alike back in the day.

And then you have Francessca, who basically summoned a different version of herself lmao. I can already see the selfcest jokes. And then, we have one of the most interesting concepts I’ve seen for a heroic spirit, Watcher. Yeah, Watcher is the Servant, but they’re merely an observer? Their master will be the one doing the fighting. Watcher basically surveils everything for their Master. A very intriguing concept, I am looking forward to seeing how Narita carries this concept forward.

Kind of insane to think that the system has been broken so much that Gil seems like the normal one here. He has a proper contract, a proper Master, and is summoned in the correct class. Which is crazy because usually it’s Gil who’s the exception or the problem. Either way, there are so many interesting things going on in Fate/Strange Fake. I absolutely LOVE how creative Narita is being with the Master-Servant pairs. And this works because he still has a few traditional Master-Servant pairs to showcase how WILD all the “exceptions” are.

That is all for now

VERY excited to see how this broken Holy Grail War progresses. And I think Ryohgo Narita’s writing style of not having a singular MC works really well with a story like this. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I am not sure how many episodes this season of FSF will run for, but it is bound to be fun. So yeah, I will take my leave here. See ya!
