Sentenced to be a Hero Episode 1 Was GOOD

Okay, bro, where in the hell did this anime come from? Why does it look so good? Why is the plot actually kind of interesting? Oh yeah, you know what’s funny? This anime is made by Studio KAI. What are some of the most successful animations Studio KAI has worked on, you might ask? Well, Umamusume: Pretty Derby anime and some of Hoshou Marine’s music videos. YEAH, those guys have given us this absolutely stunning Episode 1 for Sentenced to be a Hero. What excuse does Bandai have for One Punch Man at this point?

So yeah, welcome back to another first impressions article, and today, we are talking about Sentenced to be a Hero. I know I praised the animation a lot, but trust me, the hook for the story was pretty good too. So let’s talk about it.

What did I think of Sentenced to be a Hero Episode 1?

Look, I’ll be honest, given the name of the show, I expected it to be another generic fantasy/isekai. Then I heard the sheer glaze this anime was getting online, and a friend recommended it, so I decided to give it a chance. And, I have to say, episode 1 exceeded anything I had in my mind. When I say I want people to experiment more with fantasy and isekai tropes, this is the type of thing I mean. The story took the concept of a “hero” and completely flipped it.

As you may guess from the title of the anime, being a “hero” in this world is a punishment. You cannot die; you are to forever serve whatever the authorities ask you to do. On top of that, if you die, you will be brought back against your own will, it may not be in your own body, AND you will lose your memories in the process. Another thing I like is that Demons and Demon Lords in this anime are actual freaks of nature, hostile to humans, instead of being sentient. And of course, Xylo’s story seems pretty interesting. Of course, revenge is a pretty strong motivation.

All that said, though, the animations really carried this episode HARD. Every single frame in this episode looked like a damn movie, and it was animated so fluently, too. The fight scenes were amazing. Sharp, brutal, and just the right amount of flashy. I am not sure WHO the staff behind this anime is, but MAN they are doing SUCH an amazing job. I don’t expect the animation quality to be like this throughout the season, but damn, this episode looked AMAZING.
