I have had my eye on this manga for quite some time, but I recently noticed that an anime adaptation is in production for 2025. So, seeing that, I decided to try The Summer Hikaru Died. It did not disappoint. As the title suggests, the manga is a mystery of sorts. It isn’t a murder mystery as I first thought, those “supernatural” and “horror” tags will start to make a lot of sense as we continue to talk about it. But I do think that this series is best experienced blind so I will partition off the section where I talk about the plot.
So that means the news section will be first up. Welcome back to another edition of Put This on Your Radar – the series where I talk about upcoming anime that caught my eye. And today we are talking about The Summer Hikaru Died. As mentioned before, I will cover the news first and then delve into what the manga is about.
About The Summer Hikaru Died anime
Kadokawa (rip) opened an official website for the anime adaptation earlier this week and revealed a whole bunch of info. The anime will be directed by Ryohei Takeshita at CygamesPictures. Chiaki Kobayashi and Shuuichirou Umeda will be starring as the main duo in the series. The anime is scheduled for a Summer 2025 season release, because of course that makes sense lol. We got a teaser PV and it looks great, you can check that out here! Netflix has really stepped up their anime game recently.
Okay, so the whole reason I am separating this section is because this series is best-experienced blind, in my opinion. But still minor spoilers from the manga ahead. You’ve been warned.
About The Manga
The manga is written and illustrated by Mokumokuren. It has been serialized on the Young Ace UP website since August 2021. It originally started on the author’s Twitter lol. The 6th volume of the manga comes out this December.
The manga is about two best friends: Hikaru and Yoshiki. Both of them grew up together so Yoshiki immediately noticed that something was wrong with Hikaru despite having the same memories as his friend. Well, when he confronts Hikaru about this, “Hikaru” partially transforms into a supernatural creature and professes its love for Yoshiki. Yoshiki is wracked with guilt but finds himself getting closer to the new “Hikaru” at the same time, the town also starts experiencing weird supernatural incidents.
Yeah, this is why I placed that spoiler warning. I really think not knowing all this enhances the experience.
