True Magic in Nasuverse: Just What the Hell is it?

Article at a glance:
- Unlike modern Magecraft, which bends natural laws, True Magic defies them entirely, enabling miracles like time travel and soul materialization.
- From Zelretch’s timeline-hopping Kaleidoscope (Second Magic) to Aoko Aozaki’s enigmatic Blue (Fifth Magic), their abilities shape the entire Nasuverse.
- The Third Magic, Heaven’s Feel, is the core of Fate/Stay Night. It saved Shirou’s life in the HF route—but what about the lost First Magic or the completely unknown Fourth? Only five exist… for now.

I wanted to make an article about Witch on the Holy Night today but realized it would be weird to talk about it without going over True Magic first. One of the most important things in Witch on the Holy Night is the Fifth Magic. So, just what the hell is “true magic” in the Nasuverse? The term pops up in all the Nasuverse works except for Kara no Kyoukai if I recall correctly.
Think of modern Magecraft as a science, something you can only use to bend the rules of nature in your favor. You can’t break laws of physics with Magecraft, only bend them. I want you to remember this distinction, the modern practice we know of is Magecraft. Now, Magic, or “True” Magic as we call it is a miracle. Magic is so powerful that it completely breaks all the rules of nature and defies logic. So Magecraft would include a fireball but Magic includes powers like time travel.
So far, we know of 5 different types of True Magic in the Nasuverse. They are all numbered so let’s go over them one by one.
The First Magic
We don’t know much about the First Magic, its user, Yumina is no longer alive but because of how Magic works, there is a chance that another user may be born in the future. Even aside from that, even though Yumina has been dead, it is said that she has reached a state where she is “practically unkillable”… whatever that means.
What does the First Magic do? Well, we don’t know exactly but it can materialize Ether, which is an element in Magecraft and a lot of Alice Kuonji’s abilities stem from the First.
The Second Magic

The Second Magic is called Kaleidoscope and it was acquired by Zelretch. Kaleidoscope gives the user the ability to traverse multiple timelines and time travel. It is said that Zelretch used this ability to acquire immortality as well but that’s speculation. Zelretch is still alive so this Magic isn’t lost yet. Not much to say here, it is pretty straightforward power.
The Third Magic

Probably the most famous one here. Believe it or not, the entirety of Fate/Stay Night revolves around The Third Magic, Heaven’s Feel, or the Cup of Heaven. It was first acquired by an unknown magician in the Age of Gods. More importantly, though, it was later acquired by Justeaze von Einzbern, even though her version was not cost-efficient. And a version of Heaven’s Feel continues to exist through the Einzbern Hommunculi.
What does it do? Well, Heaven’s Feel separates a soul from its body and materializes it. That’s how Shirou’s life is saved at the end of the HF route. Ilya materializes his Soul which is then put into a puppet body.
The Fourth Magic
Somehow, The Fourth Magic is never brought up. Everyone knows it exists, its existence is acknowledged multiple times, and yet, we know nothing of the user or even the Magic itself. So this is the Magic we know the least about.
The Fifth Magic

The Fifth Magic is called Blue and it is acquired and used by Aoko Aozaki in one of the best moments in Witch on the Holy Night. The Path to the Root was discovered by her grandfather and he used it to create the Fifth Magic. Now, what does Blue do? We are not sure but it is capable is time travel, which is weird because time travel is also governed by the Second Magic. According to Alice, Blue is likely capable of manipulating energy in a unique way to produce effects like time travel,
Sixth?
Well, so far we only know of 5 types of True Magic in the Nasuverse. Someone will likely acquire the Sixth in the near future or maybe it already exists. Either way, if Nasu makes more works, I’d be interested in seeing the Sixth Magic featured in those.
That is all for now
But that’s all you need to know about the True Magic in the Nasuverse. Next week, I will write an article on Witch on the Holy Night and why you should check it out. But with that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
