How Solo Leveling Makes OP Main Character Work

I have seen people ask this question quite often: What seperates Solo Leveling from other shows with an OP MC? How Solo Leveling makes OP main character Work? And then I got to thinking about why that is. Why does Solo Leveling feel so different from say Arifureta or any other seasonal slop you can think of. Why is Solo Leveling cool but the random OP MC slop anime no. 42069 so bad? And I think I have arrived at a few points that I think make Solo Leveling a lot better than most of these OP MC animes.

So welcome back to another article and well, today we are taking a look at Solo Levling again. More specifically, I want to take a look at what makes Jin-woo so unique among other insanely overpowered protagonists. So let’s get into it.

How Solo Leveling Gets OP right

To discuss how Solo Leveling makes OP main character work, let’s start with what I think is the most important point.

Jin-woo is not some emotionally stunted edgy teen. He has been caring for his sister along for years ever since his father disappeared and his mother got sick. He is a family man through and through, this is evident as his first long-term goal is to cure his mother. Sure, he starts having fun in fight on the path to get stronger but he is still a really caring person to those he holds important. Look at his relationship with Yo Jin-Ho for example. They start out as busniess partners but end up becoming really close friends.

And now the other things I think that contribute to why Solo Leveling works so well

The world is big. Not everything revolves around Jin-woo. There are still plenty of characters stronger than Jin-woo and he is shown to struggle against poweful opponents time and again. Now sure, Jin-woo grows insanely strong but that happens over time instead of being just a one and done thing. Solo Leveling is also very self aware of what it is and it never tries to pretend otherwise. I respect that kind of writing.

The style factor. Now look, this one’s undeniable. You can’t discuss how Solo Leveling makes OP main character work without considering the style factor. Solo Leveling has a very distinct visual identity. The art style is dark, gritty and clean. “Aura farming” became thing because of a reason, okay? Not many animes can match the sheer cool factor of Solo Leveling.

It boils down to how well Jin-woo’s character is presented, how big the world is and the sheer cool factor, in my opinion. All these things are what make Solo Leveling special, this is how the anime makes an OP main character work so well. But let me know what you guys think in the comments.
