Slime Season 3 Review – Let’s Talk About it

Probably a little early considering that there are still 4 episodes to go in this season. But I more or less know what’s gonna happen in the coming episodes. So I am doing this review early because there is a lot I want to say about Slime Season 3. I struggle to decide what perspective I should approach it from. As a LN reader, I know how important this arc will become in the future. But at the same time, I understand why many anime-only people are complaining about this arc feeling boring.

It is precisely because I understand both perspectives that I think this review is going to be quite hard to write. It may seem like I am even contradicting myself at times. But bear with me. I don’t even know what I want to say in this review so I will be just writing down whatever comes to my mind. Please understand my plight here, So yeah, please forgive me if the article seems a little mish-mashed.

So yeah, welcome back to another review, today we are talking about Slime Season 3. As I said, this is going to be a long one. So strap in and let’s get started right away.

Plot

The negatives

Almost all episodes in Season 3 have at least 1 meeting lol. The episodes without a meeting involving Rimuru and his advisors are few and far between. And I have seen so many memes making fun of this aspect of Season 3. In a Light Novel format, writing like this doesn’t hurt much since you’re reading. In an anime format, this kind of pattern sticks out. Yes, the contents of the meeting were indeed important, I can understand why a lot of people got tired of the repetitive format in the anime,

Aside from that, another issue I have with the anime is the pacing. Since the anime is covering a lot of content from the LN this season, the pacing feels a bit all over the place. At times it is very fast but other times it grinds to almost a complete halt. Doesn’t help that a bunch of stuff from the LN was cut out in the anime adaptation. I understand that the anime has limited episodes and budget but there was some stuff that I wished they left in.

World-building

The world-building in this season has been exceptionally strong. As I mentioned, everything in this season will serve as a basis for future arcs. We get an important world-building event pretty much every few episodes. Be it big things like Falmouth getting a whole new monarchy with Youm as the king or the Seven Days Clergy’s removal from power in Lubelius. the Founder’s festival etc. to smaller things like the research on Magicules. There are a lot of important world-building events in this season and again, they will become important later on.

We even get constant updates on how things have changed in nations after dealing with Tempest and how things have been mutually beneficial. We see how Tempest has built highways through the forest and how they keep monsters away from them to ensure safe travels. There is so much construction and stuff happening in Tempest itself. It is crazy how much the world has changed in this season alone.

Overall

So the plot overall was decent. There weren’t any crazy plot twists in this season as far as I remember but the main focus of this season was world-building and it excelled at it. Yes, the pacing was a little off and the structure got repetitive but the plot excelled at what it sought to do.

Characters

It is crazy just how many characters this anime has. And we pretty much see all the important characters in this season. I know it could be a little hard to remember everyone but try to do it. Because again, a lot of those characters will have important roles to play in the upcoming arcs. And despite having so many characters, I do appreciate how distinctly everyone is characterized. A lot of characters have a history with each other as well.

The standouts for this season have to be Rimuru, Hinata, Shuna, Diablo, Youm and Luminous. Hinata probably got the most character development among those. But this season did a great job of showcasing Rimuru’s resourcefulness as a leader. Another important addition to the cast was Masayuki, the hero but I can’t comment on him too much without going into spoilers so I’ll leave it at that. I also really like Elmesia, the ruler of Sarion.

Diablo is kind of crazy but he’s dedicated to Rimuru and the first few episodes of this season were a good showcase for him. Youm has matured a lot since he is a king and all now. But yeah, despite the massive and ever-growing cast, this season does a decent job of handling all characters while introducing new ones. We don’t get much character development as a result but that is fine given how big the cast is.

Animations and Soundtracks

The animation quality is so inconsistent in this season. I don’t know what happened but the animation quality varies so wildly from very good to average it is kind of jarring at times, The recent episodes have been so well-animated but during Rimuru and Hinata’s fight, or I should say the first half in general, the animations were so meh, I understand the 8Bit has been quite busy, they put out Yuru Camp, Irregular at Magic High School and Shy Season 2 all while they’re still working on this. They still have Blue Lock coming up in the next season.

But still, the inconsistent animation quality does hurt the experience. The opening and ending themes on the other hand though, have been pretty good. The animations for them might not be particularly good but the songs themselves are quite nice. I feel like 8But just didn’t have enough time to work on the animations for the opening and ending themes so they just stuck to stills for the most part.
