The Angel Next Door Season 2 Review: Faulty but Good

Article at a glance:
- Even though the narrative slows to a absolute crawl this season, the excellent character writing keeps every single episode incredibly enjoyable and worth watching.
- While the show remains unmatched if you want a quick dose of wholesomeness, the plot lacks any tangible relationship growth and relies heavily on a repetitive loop of romantic teases.
- What the main story lacks in momentum, the season makes up for by expanding the world, giving us amazing subplots with Itsuki and Chitose, and introducing Amane’s parents as arguably the best addition to the cast.

The Angel Next Door Season 2 is a very interesting case. Not that it is bad, far from it. I really enjoyed the season overall; not a single episode was bad. But the thing is, the plot kind of has nowhere to go at this point. But since the characters are strong, there’s still a lot of bite into and enjoy here. If you read any of my articles before this review on The Angel Next Door Season 2, you would always see me praising the characters. And rightfully so, this was a very character-driven season.
So yeah, I think that introduction sets the tone for this review. I don’t think I need to give a spoiler warning here since there’s nothing to spoil at all. But strap in, this will be another long review.
Welcome to my first review for the spring 2026 season, and today, we are talking about The Angel Next Door Season 2. I have a lot of thoughts on the show, so let’s just get started.
Plot

Look, the anime is still wholesome and sweet as hell, don’t get me wrong. If you want a quick dose of sugar, there are only a few things that can top The Angel Next Door. But man, the narrative has slowed to a crawl. Most of Season 2 boils down to situations that build romantic tension before Amane backs away with his god-tier self-control. Look, it is nice that he has boundaries and doesn’t want to be reckless, but it gets old fast when you’ve seen this same pattern repeat like 4-5 times in the span of 10 episodes.
There is a complete lack of any significant, tangible relationship growth. Amane and Mahiru’s dynamic hasn’t really evolved in the 10 episodes so far. I don’t know if anything drastic will happen in the last 2 episodes, but even if it does, it won’t fix the 10 episodes of nothing. Season 1 was slow, too. Heck, the LNs are slow as hell, too, but both of them still have tangible growth in the relationship. Season 2 lacks that completely. Amane and Mahiru talk about boundaries and “the future” a lot without really acting on them. And this makes the reliance on tropes more visible, which sours the overall story further.
After I’ve said all that, you’d think that the Season 2 story has nothing redeemable at all. But that’s not true. Season 2 does a great job of expanding the story past Mahiru and Amane. Amane’s parents were a great addition, Itsuki’s father having issues with Itsuki and Chistose’s relationship was a nice touch, and I love how the overall class has turned into a protection group for Amane and Mahiru lol.

Characters
Now, thankfully, the characters are still really well-written, and that makes the show still enjoyable despite the plot slowing to a crawl.
Amane and Mahiru
Despite the lack of any tangible growth, Amane and Mahiru are still great characters. I know some people find them being possessive of each other kinda annoying, but I find it cute. Their dynamic still feels incredibly natural, and they bounce off the side characters really well. It never gets old seeing them just flirt around and forgetting that the world around them even exists. There’s a certain charm to just how naturally they just feel like an already married couple, and they’ve really become comfortable around each other.
And even though the lack of growth is a bit frustrating, I do appreciate how openly they communicate with each other. I really like how much they support each other, too. Both of them are mature enough to give the other person their private time, too.
Itsuki and Chitose

Chitose is just such an entertaining character to watch. Be it trolling Amane or imparting “secret” knowledge to Mahiru, every scene she is in is guaranteed to get a good laugh out of me. And Itsuki complements her personality perfectly. He does not shy away from Chitose’s antics and often joins her in doing something stupid.
Daiki, Itsuki’s father, not approving of their relationship because of what happened to Itsuki’s older brother, was a really interesting side plot. Curious to see if they will continue it in the future seasons too. I like how Chitose reached out to Amane about Itsuki’s father, which shows a certain level of trust in him as a friend. I like to see small things like that, goes a long way to define character relationships. And then during the school festival, I really liked how even Mahiru and Amane’s parents jumped in to try and convince Daiki about Chitose. So yeah, I hope they continue this story in the future because of how interesting it is.
Amane’s Parents

Arguably the best addition to the cast. We only saw a little bit of Amane’s mother in the last season. But it is really wholesome how quickly they accept Mahiru as basically their own daughter. Especially Amane’s mother is very excited about having Mahiru as her daughter-in-law soon lol. While Amane’s dad is just based, hell wants Amane to rely on them a little more. He knows Amane too well lol. I really liked the father-son conversation they had in Episode 10. I may not have a girlfriend I want to marry, but that’s basically how my conversations with my father go, too, lol.
You really just have to love the dynamic Amane’s parents have, though. Amane’s mother is a lively one, while Amane is just like his father, calm, observant, and mature. I thoroughly enjoyed every single scene they were a part of; both of them are incredible parents.
Production

It’s that part of the review again, and yeah, The Angel Next Door Season 2 has pretty good production. Sure, the animations look stiff at times, but the art is still great. Again, it is a little too bright for my taste, but what the hell, it fits the vibe of the story, so who cares. And the animations are not bad, by any means, just that sometimes you will notice the stiffness is all.
The opening theme is okay, but I didn’t really like it that much. But the ending theme is really nice, both visually, and I liked the song too. The voice acting once again is very good. Amane and Mahiru actually feel like teenagers in love, and I would like to give a special shout-out to Amane’s mom’s VA. She killed it with her energetic performance once again lol.
Nothing major to complain about in this department, but not much stands out to warrant praise either.
Summing Up
Here are my final review scores for The Angel Next Door Season 2
- Plot – 6/10
- Characters – 9/10
- Production – 7/10
- Enjoyment – 9/10
- Overall – 7.75/10
But yeah, that concludes my thoughts and opinions on The Angel Next Door Season 2. An overall pretty good and enjoyable season held back by bad plot and terrible pacing. This is what I mean when I say characters are the most important thing in media. Good characters can carry a bad plot, but a good plot can’t carry bad characters. But let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
