The Rick and Morty Anime is Hilariously Horrible

Article at a glance:

  • The anime suffers from choppy, unappealing visuals, with some scenes resembling a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Rick’s clever cynicism and Morty’s charm are gone, with side characters serving as mere plot devices.
  • The writing is disorienting, with bad pacing that disrupts any potential tension or momentum.

Did you guys know Rick and Morty got an anime adaptation? No? I don’t blame you. And in fact, it’s best that you promptly forget it ever existed lol. This is one of those moments where I hate my content creator’s curiosity. I seriously regret even giving a chance to this anime. I watched two episodes and I just cannot continue any further, I give up.

Now, I am not the biggest Rick and Morty fan out there. But as someone who has an appreciation for good media, I am more than willing to admit that the first few seasons of Rick and Morty are really damn good. I lost interest in the later seasons but I still do think that the first few seasons are great. I know that the humor isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I don’t mind it at all, in fact, I liked the original show’s humor. The Rick and Morty anime though is horrendous and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. So let’s talk about it.

What do I think of the Rick and Morty anime?

First of all, the art and animations are terrible. The show isn’t appealing at all to look at. I don’t know what their aim was but I have seen videos on Rule 34 with better animations and art. This is an anime based on an iconic TV show how in the hell did it end up with animations this terrible? Sometimes it feels like I am watching a damn PowerPoint presentation because of how choppy the animations are. An ugly presentation at that. And to top all that off, none of the original English cast returns to do the English dubbing for the anime.

Rick and Morty’s characterizations are down in the gutter as well. Rick’s intelligent cynicism is gone. He is both less funny and less clever. Morty’s character switches on a dime depending on what the “plot” needs him for. His charm from the original series is gone. The side characters… I- I don’t even want to call them “characters” because that term implies that they have a character. Those just exist to move the plot forward. Nothing more.

And no, the plot isn’t good either. It is confusing and disorienting. It’s not like the original show where you had to pay attention to keep track of things, no. Nothing makes sense here. The writing sucks. And the pacing sucks even more because whenever something “important” is about to happen, the anime pulls us into a completely different scene shutting off the tension and momentum the previous scene built up. So much of this show feels like it was just there to pad out the runtime.

That is all for now

Ultimately, I have no idea who the Rick and Morty anime is even made for. It is terrible and I don’t recommend wasting your time on it. Let me know what you guys think in the comments, I will take my leave here. See ya!
