Top 5 Isekai Anime Series That You Should Watch

Isekai is one of the most popular genres of anime. It involves the main character(s) getting sent to a parallel world (or as we would call it in Japanese, “Isekai”) by various means such as dying and reincarnating, teleporting, etc. there are a lot of variations in this tried and tested formula like reincarnating as a baby or as the same person; teleported willingly or unwillingly and so on.
I like this genre because it gives room for a lot of experimentation yet, many anime choose to stick with the same old method and things, which is not wrong but gets old relatively quickly. I am listing my top 5 picks for isekai anime, which I love because there is something different about these and I will also link the MyAnimeList page for a detailed plot summary (I will give a little bit of the plot myself). The list is in random order, so there is no 1.

Tate no Yuusha Nariagari (Rising of the Shield Hero)
In the starting, this will appear a normal isekai you, summoned to another world to protect it from a threat. But, here’s the 1st twist: there are three more people summoned except the protagonist. All 4 of them have unique weapons: sword, spear, bow, and shield. The protagonist, Iwatani Naofumi, is the shield hero. 2nd twist: all 4 of the heroes come from alternate timelines. 3rd twist: no one is willing to join Naofumi’s party (one does, though). And finally, the 4th twist that defines the anime: Naofumi is framed by the person who joined his party for assaulting her. She takes away all his money, and it turns out she is the princess of the country. Naofumi loses all his respect and the privileges he was getting from the kingdom. Everyone shuns Naofumi for something he had not done.
After this betrayal, Naofumi goes dark. He was originally polite and curt after betrayal; he becomes cold and untrusting of everyone. He does everything he can to get his way. He never even helps people for free (well, he is not getting funds from the kingdom like the other heroes). It’s a must-watch. Just watching Naofumi’s character grow is fun in itself. And season 1 ends with a rather shocking revelation. The good news is we are getting a season 2 this year sometime and hence it is one of the top 5 isekai anime series.

Kono Subarashii Sekai Ni Shukufuku Wo (Konosuba or God’s Blessings on This Wonderful World)
Now I was talking about anime that do something different with the genre. But, here is Konosuba taking using all the clichΓ©s and turning them into something so funny that even if you watch the anime multiple times, you won’t get bored of it. Satou Kazuma dies saving a girl from a road accident and is put in front of a goddess who offers to reincarnate him as he is in a parallel world to defeat the demon king, and she says he can take one thing with him. Any powerful weapon, ability, knowledge, anything. ClichΓ© right? The goddess tells Kazuma that the girl he saved wasn’t in any danger as it was just a tractor passing by and would not have hot the girl anyway.
Further, Kazuma died from the shock and was so scared that he wet his pants. The doctors did not treat him because of that and were laughing after hearing his case. After hearing all this, what Kazuma decides to take to the other world is the goddess herself. It is an amusing anime. It uses clichΓ©s to make itself even funnier.

Hataraku Maou Sama (The Devil is a Part Timer)
One of the underrated gems of the isekai genre. This is different because instead of going to another world, the protagonist (who happens to be the Demon King of his world) comes to our world (to Japan more specifically. Because where else would a Demon King go. If you know what I mean) while running from the heroes that were close to defeating him. He loses all his magic and takes on the name Maou Sadao and lives everyday life. The best part is that he works in McDonald’s. In this anime, we see Maou trying to protect his daily life from the guys who came from his world trying to kill him. This anime has all comedy, super fights, a strong af protagonist, and a tsundere heroine.

Tensei Shittara Slime Datta Ken (TenSura or The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)
Again, this anime follows the reincarnation after death stereotype. The twist being, the protagonist, is reincarnated as slime and not human. He can take human form later, but still, he is a slime. Satoru Mikami, a middle-aged salaryman, dies while protecting his colleague from a random thief. He hears some strange in his mind while dying, which makes no sense to him. When he comes to, he is a slime in a parallel world. He takes command over a goblin village and protects them. Slowly, the town grows in size and population, with Satoru (who now has taken the name Rimuru) as its leader.
Again, this anime has an OP (overpowered) protagonist. Its first half is fairly light-hearted and only throws hints at the darker things in the world. In its second half or more specifically from the “Demon Lord Ascension” arc, the series takes a turn, and the darker side of the series becomes more apparent. The good news is that we will get the adaptation of the “Demon Lord Ascension” arc this year (it will be the second part of season 2). The overall package the series brings is awesome and hence it is a part of top 5 isekai anime series.

Drifters
Again one of the underrated gems of the isekai genre. It’s very different from a normal isekai. A normal soldier during the Battle of Sekigahara, Shimazu Toyohisa is critically wounded, protecting his retreating troops. He suddenly finds himself in a modern hallway with countless doors on both sides. A man named Murasaki is sitting in the hallway. Toyohisa is pulled in the nearest, and when he wakes up, he finds himself in a completely different world. He is treated by two people who seem to be from his world.
They identify themselves as Oda Nobunaga, the infamous king from the Sengoku period, and Yoichi Suketaka Nasu, the samurai from the Battle of Yashima. This anime just got ignored because it dropped on the wrong season. It was released alongside Haikyuu’s most exciting season, Yuri on ice, Bungo Stray Dogs 2, 3 Gatsu no lion, and Natsume Yuujinchou 5. That’s all the reason why this anime is underrated; otherwise, the same author’s work: “Helsing Ultimate,” is pretty damn famous.
We all know Helsing Ultimate. Drifters are equally good as Helsing Ultimate, be it the story, the characters (while drifters have a more diverse cast of characters; I like most of them. Not to mention, their character designs are very cool but, Helsing has a beast called Alucard. Alucard is enough to carry the whole Helsing anime), the animations, and the fights. Both anime have a unique art style which, looks very cool.

Final Thoughts on Top 5 Isekai Anime Series
That was the list of my favorite isekai series. All these anime tried something new with the genre. Isekai is a genre that provides a lot of possibilities. It saddens me when people stick to the same old clichΓ©s when the genre can be a lot more than that. Let me know down in the comments some of your favorite isekai. I’ll take my leave here again. See you!
