Why I’m Not Looking Forward to Shield Hero Season 4

Article at a glance:
- Shield Hero Season 1 was a masterpiece—gritty, consequential, and raw. But after that? The series lost its edge, trading tension for tired tropes.
- Season 3 doubled down on recycling Season 1’s formula, and I know Season 4 will do the same. Why bother if it’s just a hollow copy?
- I gave Shield Hero every chance, but after rewatching Season 1, the decline is undeniable. Summer 2025 is a stacked season and there are tons of other upcoming anime that deserve my time more than this.

Let me preface this article by saying that I absolutely adore Shield Hero Season 1. In my opinion, Shield Hero Season 1 is some of the best isekai entertainment you could ask for. Everything has consequences, the plot is gritty and dark and the pacing is tight. But every story arc after Season 1 feels like it is trying its best to capture the same magic of Season 1 but failing very badly at it. Season 3 basically reused Season 1’s formula twice as well. And given all that, I am not looking forward to Shield Hero Season 4.
So welcome back to another article. And I’m sorry to start this week on a downer but I want to go over why I’m not looking forward to Shield Hero Season 4 and why I liked this series in the first place. So let’s get started.

What went wrong with Shield Hero?
The first season of Shield Hero hits so hard because everything has consequences. Even seemingly heroic deeds only serve to torment people. And most importantly, there was a power cost. Naofumi’s Wrath powers literally devoured his life force so it would create tension whenever Naofumi brought out the Wrath shield. Malty was absolutely detestable and disgusting as an antagonist too. Season 1 was not perfect by any means but it was this unique mixture of grit and emotion you could get behind.
What happened after Season 1? Well, after Season 1, the show loses its edge. It loses its grit, which made it stand out in the first place. Naofumi gets no significant character development after Season 1 either. The show starts feeling increasingly like a typical isekai anime that is trying its best to be dark. Shield Hero is starting to feel like a cheap copy of itself and Season 3 is the very evidence of this fact. Season 3 recycled the formula of Season 1 not once, but twice with Motoyasu and Ren instead of Naofumi.

And Season 4 will likely repeat the same thing again with Itsuki. At this point, Shield Hero has completely lost me. I was very charitable with it when the horrendous Turtle arc came out, believing that it would get better. And it did get better in Season 2’s second half but upon recently rewatching Season 1, I’ve come to realize just how far the anime has fallen. And now, I don’t want any revisionist history that Shield Hero was never good. No, the first season of Shield Hero is genuinely amazing.
That is all for now
But yeah, that is why I am not looking forward to Shield Hero Season 4 and I don’t think I will watch it when it airs either. Summer 2025 is a stacked season as is, I won’t waste my time on an anime I KNOW I won’t enjoy. But yeah, with that said, I will take my leave here. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. See ya!
