So I felt like I didn’t gush enough about Blue Lock in the last article where I was discussing some Season 2 news So here I am back to gush some more. Blue Lock is easily among my favorite sports anime of all time. It is a hype machine, and the awesome characters, unique patterns of the matches, and incredible voice performances keep you engaged. It is not standard football anime. Yes, it is overdramatic at times, sometimes borderline ridiculous but it is fun as hell.

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about the Blue Lock anime. I love this series. I just checked out the latest chapter of the manga and some crazy things are coming in Season 2 lol. With that said, let’s get started right away.

Blue Lock is based on the manga of the same name by Kaneshiro Maneyuki and illustrated by Nomura Yuusuke. The manga has been serialized in the weekly Shounen magazine since August 2018 and is still ongoing. As for the anime, it is produced by Bandai Namco and animated by 8bit. It currently has 1 season of 24 episodes and a spin-off movie. Season 2 has been confirmed for this year’s fall season. So it will come out sometime in October.

Isagi Yoichi failed to score a goal that would’ve put his team on its way to the nationals. He is frustrated and lost. But then. he is one of the 300 selected for a project called Blue Lock. Blue Lock is a facility where the competition is ruthless. Its goal? To create the ultimate striker and put the Japanese football team back on the map. Those who fail to live up to the standards are sent back home. And they are barred from ever trying for the nationals again. Essentially ending their football careers.

The concept of Blue Lock gives rise to some very interesting competition types. We start off with small teams. This allows us to learn about each character over time. Then the show slowly trickles down to new characters. And you instantly know which one of these characters will be important later on. The pacing of the plot is amazing. It does a great job of keeping you engaged. There are quite a few interesting plot twists as well. Usually, sports anime are not known for their plot but Blue Lock has a damn good one.

Like all sports anime though, the main focus of Blue Lock are the characters and the matches. It is fun to see how characters evolve. How they acquire new techniques that allow them to survive in the Blue Lock. Isagi himself is a perfect example of this. He was nothing special when he entered Blue Lock. But, he had a desire to learn and become something and some innate potential. He grows so much over the episodes. You can tell the difference between his character in episode 1 and episode 24. There is a similar character arc for every major character.

Some of them are already talented, like Rin but through Blue Lock find new avenues to expand themselves. This is what makes the characters in the show work. Everyone has a desire to grow. Be it to surpass someone in particular or to just be the best.

The animations are awesome. I don’t remember the opening themes of the anime much but the animations really do carry the weight of the matches. The animations also do a great job of capturing how unhinged this anime is at times lol. The soundtracks in general are alright, nothing special.

Summing up

Here’s why you should watch Blue Lock anime:

  • Great plot
  • Fast-paced
  • Amazing characters
  • Awesome and interesting matches
  • Great animations

That is all for now! Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. Check out Blue Lock Season 2 news here. And I am off to watch some anime. See ya!
