Demon Slayer vs. Superman: Why Anime is Beating Hollywood?

Article at a glance:
- Anime did the unthinkable: Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle Part 1 outgrossed James Gunn’s Superman. The tables have turned, and Hollywood’s golden cape is slipping.
- Hollywood’s stuck in a loop of bloated budgets and safe formulas, while anime just gives fans what they actually want, fun and heart.
- This isn’t just about Demon Slayer; it’s a full-on cultural shift. People are tired of the noise and turning to stories that feel alive again.

Well, it happened. Tanjiro actually beat Superman. Literally stole his lunch, and Superman was left staring at the air. Why is anime beating Hollywood, you ask? It’s because Hollywood got complacent, it’s because Superhero fatigue is becoming a real thing, it’s because bloated budgets are a real problem, and finally, it’s because people just want genuine entertainment. Almost every Hollywood movie these days comes with a heavy baggage; meanwhile, anime is completely free from all that.
And if you read my review for the Infinity Castle Part 1, you’ll know I wasn’t the biggest fan of it. But even then, I am so glad that anime is winning over Hollywood. Yes, the anime industry as a whole has many issues too, but again, it’s not like Hollywood is clean when it comes to overwork/underpay issues either. But yeah, let’s talk about why anime is beating Hollywood today.

Why is Hollywood Losing?
Well, I was one of the people who used to claim that “Superhero fatigue” is not a real thing, and people would actually show up to watch the good movies. Turns out I was wrong. Fantastic Four: First Steps and James Gunn’s Superman were both decent films, but their box office performance was a disappointment. Marvel has burned so many bridges with their audience that the mainstream audience has just moved on. It’s just nerds like us who still somewhat care about their projects. And yes, this affects DC, too.
Another thing I want to touch on is the damn bloated budgets. Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Part 1 was made on a budget of just 20 million, and it bagged 635 million+ worldwide. James Gunn’s Superman was made on a budget of like 225 million and bagged 616 million+ at the box office. You tell me which of the two is more impressive. Hollywood needs to realize that not everything needs a couple of hundred million for the budget. This happened in 2023, too, when Godzilla Minus One, a movie made for just 10-15 million US$, took home 110+ million worldwide.

Why is anime winning?
Well, because it’s fun. No strings attached, no preaching, no unnecessary baggage, it’s just pure, straightforward entertainment. Demon Slayer is not the perfect anime, not by a long shot, but it’s the perfect version of the Hollywood Blockbuster format, if that makes sense. That movie embodies everything Hollywood once stood for. And thanks to the success of Demon Slayer, the floodgates are now open for other anime movies to rule the worldwide box office.
I know this means that more studios will try to milk their popular anime by making movies for them (cough cough Mappa cough), but if that’s what it takes for Hollywood to open their eyes, I am good with it. But Hollywood is too blinded by its own arrogance to see that their empire is falling apart right in front of its eyes. I just hope by the time they catch on, there’s still an empire left to save.
That is all for now
That’s enough yaapping for today. I hope I managed to convey why anime is beating Hollywood. I didn’t want to drag politics into this because Hollywood honestly has bigger things to worry about. But I am aware that people are tired of the politics, too. Which is completely understandable. But yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
