GKIDS to Release ChaO Anime Film on Blu-ray This September

GKIDS announced that it will release the anime film ChaO on Blu-ray Disc in the US on September 22. This high-definition 1080p release includes extra features like storyboards, animatics, teasers, and trailers.
The film, directed by Yasuhiro Aoki and animated by Studio 4°C, is now available digitally in the US. A Canadian digital release is also planned. The Blu-ray offers Japanese audio alongside English, English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitles.
ChaO premiered in Japan in August 2025. It has since screened in 16 countries, making appearances at several international film festivals. These include the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize, as well as festivals in New York, Montreal, Ottawa, Los Angeles, and Sitges.
The story centers around Stephan, a quiet shipbuilding office worker who is unexpectedly proposed to by Chao, a mermaid princess. Their unusual romance blossoms as Stephan’s reserved nature softens under Chao’s straightforward affection.
The voice cast features Ōji Suzuka as Stephan and Anna Yamada as Chao. The character designs and chief animation direction are by Hirokazu Kojima. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Takatsugu Muramatsu, with Hiroshi Takiguchi serving as art director.
The opening theme “ChaO!” is performed by Kumi Kōda, specially created for the film. Distributed by Toei, ChaO showcases a fresh take on romantic comedy with a sci-fi twist.
GKIDS has played a key role in bringing this unique story to audiences outside Japan, providing fans with various ways to enjoy the film. The upcoming Blu-ray release gives collectors a chance to own the film with in-depth bonus material.
