Grand Blue Season 2 Review – As WILD as Ever

Article at a glance:
- Season 2 keeps the chaos alive with the same wild humor and fresh new twists.
- More focus on Iori this time, showing both his flaws and surprisingly wholesome side.
- Production is solid, comedy still lands, and the enjoyment factor is off the charts.

So before I start, I have decided to make a slight change to my review structure. Instead of calling the 3rd section “Animations and Soundtracks”, I will call it “Production” from here on. That section will encompass everything from animations to soundtracks to direction. Time to dive into the Grand Blue Season 2 review.
I don’t know if Grand Blue Season 2 will reach the same legendary status as Season 1, but I can promise that the show does deliver. So welcome to my review of Grand Blue Season 2. I don’t think I need to issue a spoiler warning here, so let’s just start.

Plot
You’re not watching Grand Blue for some grand marrative. You know that. You are here for the memes and wild situations the show drags you through. A consistent theme of Season 2 has been the focus on Iori. Sure, the show makes a lot of fun of him, as always, but I like how Season 2 has been taking the time to highlight his positive qualities as well. Even though most episodes are episodic instead of covering an arc, this theme of highlighting Iori is consistent, and I like it.
Season 2 also feels fresh because of how many new variables it introduces. Our core group of characters is still present and still as wild as ever. Season 2 just adds a lot of new side characters to spice things up while keeping the familiarity. The pacing is decent for the most part, but because of the episodic nature, sometimes the first half and second half of the episode can be about completely different things, and that can feel a little weird.

Characters
As I mentioned in the plot section, the main focus of Season 2 is on highlighting Iori in a more positive light. The show does not shy away from his flaws lol, we never miss the chance to laugh at Iori’s expense. And he gets put in much wackier situations than in Season 1. As much as I appreciate the new side characters, I wish we got a bit more time with our core cast as well. Tokki and Bukki are kind of sidelined in this season, which is a bit of a letdown.
But Iori and Kohei’s college friends get a lot more screen time, and I’ve really started to love how all 5 of them are just a group of dumb idiots doing dumb things. It is incredibly funny. The character interactions remain the best part of the show, as always.

Production
The animation quality is in line with Season 1. I think they turned down the sheer unhinged factor of the expressions in Season 2 compared to Season 1, but the meme expressions are still really funny. Also, the opening theme is such a banger. I do miss the iconic Season 1 ending theme, though. The new ending theme just doesn’t hit the same as “Fairtale wa sasayaku-“ even though it’s a pretty good song.
Not much to say here other than that.
Summing Up
Here are my final review scores for Grand Blue Season 2:
- Plot – 7/10
- Characters – 8/10
- Production – 7/10
- Enjoyment – 10/10
- Overall – 8/10
