My Dress-up Darling Review – The Unexpected Hit

My Dress-up Darling became a meme-favorite anime ever since the first episode. I ain’t gonna lie, I wouldn’t have watched this anime normally but I checked it out because my boss recommended it. This anime is really enjoyable, there is not much special about the story or anything else; it is just fun to watch. I really enjoyed this anime and honestly, the memes made it better.
Here is my first winter 2022 review, there are of course going to be more of these so keep an eye out for them. The review is completelyΒ spoiler-freeΒ so you don’t have to worry. Quite honestly though, My Dress-up Darling is one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve seen in a while. So let’s get started with the review.
Plot
My Dress-up Darling revolves around Gojo Wakana, an introvert whose family owns a Hina Doll shop. From childhood, he admired his grandfather’s works as a doll maker, and one day he dreams of creating a masterpiece like his grandfather. The famous girl from his class Kitagawa Marin one day catches him sewing doll outfits and requests him to make a costume for her. Thus, starts this unexpected friendship with a lot of cosplays to come.
So pretty standard boy meets girl setting with quite a bit of fan service. But what I like about My Dress-up Darling is how it does not focus too much on the plot. The simple plot allows for a lot of fun scenes and some great character dynamics. And you know, let’s be honest no one like this anime for the plot.
Characters
This is where stuff gets a bit more interesting. My Dress-up Darling has one of the best examples of the Gyaru stereotype. I have seen a lot of manga take an attempt at it and fail. Marin is a breath of fresh air because she is not the shy type like most of romance anime heroines, she is bold and says what she thinks. So whenever she is embarrassed and fumbles her words, it becomes even more hilarious.
I love the dynamic she has with Gojo. I am not too fond of Gojo though because he is the usual dense type of anime protagonist; he is a good guy but he’s just bland in my opinion.
Animations and Soundtracks
The animations of My Dress-up Darling aren’t that good. They are rather average but they do look really good at times because of the good art direction. As always I love the fact that the studio gave us a lot of meme expressions and scenes and also the fact that they nodded to a few famous memes. The soundtracks are pretty average too but the opening theme is just awesome.
The fan service may not be for everyone. I will be honest, sometimes the fan service does feel unnecessary/overboard but I am willing to overlook that much because the series is fun. Some people cannon overlook that part so consider yourself warned.
Conclusion
Here are my final scores for My Dress-up Darling:
- Plot – 6/10
- Characters – 7/10
- Animations – 7/10
- Soundtracks – 7/10
- Enjoyment – 9/10
- Cosplaying Girlfriend – 10/10
- Overall – 7/10
Well, that concludes my review for My Dress-up Darling. As I said, it is not the type of series to get crazy high scores critically but is still really enjoyable. It may not be for everyone but it is a really enjoyable and fun anime. I had a blast watching this; let me know what you think in the comments. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
