Yes, I chose One Piece for this week’s manga recommendation because the anime reboot got a bunch of new info. I will most likely cover that in a separate article depending on how substantial the information is. But One Piece man, what can I say that hasn’t been said before? There is a reason why this manga has been running for ages and still manages to be popular. And this is one of the cases where I would actually say that the manga is better than the anime, well, till the reboot comes out at least.
Yes, the current anime adaptation of One Piece is meh. It has its moments but I think in general, the current anime adaptation has really bad pacing. That’s not what we’re talking about today though. So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series, this week we are talking about One Piece. Let’s get into it
Introduction
One Piece manga is written and illustrated by the legend, Eichiro Oda. It has been serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump magazine since July 1997 and is still ongoing, over 27 years later. The current anime adaptation is made by Toei Animation and has been ongoing since 1999. Of course, there is a reboot anime scheduled as well, and this reboot will be made by Wit Studio. For now, only the first arc has been announced for the reboot but I am sure they will cover more eventually.
Plot
Like all shounen anime, the plot is pretty simple on the surface. The King of Pirates, Gol D. Roger is about to be executed but just before his death, he reveals that a great treasure simply known as the “One Piece” exists and can be claimed by anyone worthy enough, 22 years after Roger’s execution, our story begins following a young man named Monkey D. Luffy. His goal? Find the One Piece and become the King of Pirates.
Obviously, there is a lot more to it. The manga is older than me, after all, lol. Even after all these years, we are not even sure about what the One Piece is anyway. And yes, the manga is still interesting as hell. The world-building in One Piece is almost unparalleled. There is so much to sink your teeth into in this manga. I know that the chapter count will be intimidating to anyone thinking about picking this manga up but trust me, it is worth it simply because of how good OP is.
Characters
OP has so many iconic characters like Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Ace, Sanji, and Robin, that I could go on all day listing the iconic characters from this series. The character arcs in One Piece are really good. The characters have all kinds of quirky and whacky personalities which makes their interactions and conversations a joy to read. I mean what else do you expect? We have a huge cast given how long the series has been going on and it is an amazing cast of characters.
Art
OP’s art style is quirky. It is very distinct. This is why the character designs from OP stand out so much. One look at a character and you will know that they’re from One Piece. The art in the older chapters does feel a little dated but the art has improved a lot over all these years of serilization.
