Shadows House, Manga Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:
- Shadows House offers a captivating story filled with dark secrets and complex mysteries centered around a house inhabited by shadows and their living dolls.
- The relationship between the smart and collected Kate and her eccentric, innocent doll Emilco is well-developed and central to the narrative.
- The manga effectively conveys emotions through its art, despite the challenge of depicting faceless shadows, making it visually impressive.

I had been wanting to dip my toes into this series for a while. And I finally got the opportunity to do so. Shadows House, despite appearing innocent on the surface is a Seinen manga. And you that means it is dealing with some heavy stuff. And I do mean heavy. Questions about humanity aside, this manga has some crazy mysteries. And some of them can get pretty dark. And then there are the “Administrators” don’t even get me started on them. I’d love to do a deep dive into the mysteries of this manga.
But that is not what we’re here for today. I will do that maybe next week. But for this week, welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are talking about Shadows House. Let’s get started!

Introduction
Shadows House is written and illustrated by Soumatou. It has been serialized in the Young Jump magazine since September 2018 and is still ongoing. I believe currently it has 17 volumes. It has also been adapted into two seasons of anime by CloverWorks. The anime adaptations are also great so you can check those out if you wish. Nothing about a Season 3 so far but I think they will announce it once the manga progresses a little further. Season 2 came out in 2022 after all.
Plot
As the name suggests, the manga focuses on a house full of shadows… And I mean that quite literally. Everyone living in that house is a shadow and they constantly leak out black soot. All shadows are assigned a living doll that resembles them. The doll has to represent their master and clean up the soot. The story follows Kate and her doll, Emilco as they grow closer to each other and uncover various mysteries and dark secrets of the mansion. Also, there are these guys called the “Administrators” who watch each Shadow-doll pair closely.

That is all I’ll tell you. Because saying any more than that will put us into spoiler territory and I want to avoid that with this manga. The mysteries are one of the best parts of the series and spoiling them would be no fun. The less you know about the series, the more you will enjoy it.
Characters
Most of the character development is placed squarely on Emilco and Kate. A good portion of the story is dedicated to their relationship after all. And man, their dynamic is incredibly well done. Kate is smart and collected and Emilco is the eccentric, innocent type. This awesome main duo is supported by a great support cast with characters like John, Shaun, Barbie, Lou, etc. Each character has an interesting and different dynamic with their dolls and that is pretty cool.

Art
I have to praise the art in this manga. It is not easy to convey emotions through shadows. You know, since they have no facial features and all. In the anime adaptation, you can rely on the voice acting to convey emotions. But a manga doesn’t have that. And yet somehow, this manga manages to do that through art and it is amazing. So yeah, that art is really good.
Summing Up
Here’s why you should check out Shadows House:
- Awesome plot
- Mysterious and interesting world
- Amazing characters
- Great art
That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Check out this week’s anime recommendation here! With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
