Introduction

Masamune-kun is written by Takeoka Hazuki and illustrated by Tiv. It was serialized in the Comic REX magazine from 27th October 2012 to 27th June 2018. This manga is very short at just 61 chapters or 11 volumes. It also has an anime adaptation of 12 episodes with a second season of the anime currently in production.

Masamune-kun is kind of like a more serious and darker version of Kaguya-sama. It is full of intense moments and you just have to love the protagonist for his determination. He is hell-bent on achieving his goal. Let’s get into a little more detail.

Plot

Masamune-kun follows the titular Makabe Masamune who used to be really fat back when he was young. There was this rich girl called Adagaki Aki who bullied and called him “piggie”. To take his revenge on Aki, Masamune changes himself and becomes a smart ikemen. He transfers to her high school and aims to make her fall for him only to reject her in the end to complete his revenge. But amidst all this, someone finds out his identity and blackmails him.

Masamune-kun has a very tight plot, it is fast-paced and full of twists. We see Masamune work toward his goal slowly but surely. The ways he decodes to go about it are really something too. A lot of people criticize the ending but, I think it was a good ending. It was a really fitting end for the series. Of course, no spoilers here.

Characters

Masamune-kun no Revenge doesn’t have that many important characters. Most of the stuff is focused around the main duo. Both of them get a fair amount of character development and they are really well written as-is. Masamune himself is really focused on his goal and he is willing to go to any lengths to achieve it. Aki herself is kind of a divisive character, some like her some don’t. I do like her but, she did get what she deserved.

Art

Masamune-kun has pretty ok art. It is nothing too crazy but gets the job done. I do like the art style and character designs but, I accept it is nothing too crazy. The art details dont matter for a story like this but, the art does do a good job of reinforcing a few scenes. So it is good art just nothing too noteworthy.
