The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Anime Recommendation!

Key points for Anime Recommendation – The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:

  • The series thrives on absurdity, with a plot that serves as a backdrop for character interactions and development, particularly centered around the complex and intriguing Haruhi Suzumiya.
  • With Kyoto Animation at the helm, expect nothing short of excellence in animation quality, fluidity, and the iconic art style that defines the series, accompanied by memorable soundtracks.
  • Despite its whimsical nature, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya leaves a lasting impression, as evidenced by its memorable characters and enduring appeal, making it a must-watch for both newcomers and seasoned anime enthusiasts alike.

I first watched this series all the way back when I was pretty new to anime. I think I had only watched around 30 anime back then. And I was quite young so I don’t think I even had the mental maturity to appreciate the deeper themes of the show back then. But I still watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya because it was interesting and funny. I still remembered the characters of this show quite well even when I was rewatching it recently. I was genuinely surprised by just how much of this show I remembered despite having only watched it once before.

So I decided that it would make for the perfect anime recommendation for the week. So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we will be talking about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya! Let’s get started!

Introduction

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is based on the LN of the same name by Tanigawa Nagaru and illustrated by Itou Noizi. It has been serialized in The Sneaker magazine since June 2003. As for the anime, it was made by Kyoto Animation. It has 2 seasons of 14 episodes each and a sequel movie. Of course, the anime does not cover the whole LN so you can read the LN if you wish as well. The anime also has a few OVA/Specials here and there.

Plot

I am not even sure where to start lol. So Suzumiya Haruhi is extremely bored with her daily life because she has never met a supernatural being and is tired of “normal” people. There aren’t clubs in her school that focus on the occult either. Unknowingly though, our MC, Kyon inspires her to start her own club and she even finds 3 members other than Kyon to join the club. Things aren’t as simple as they seem though because the club members have a lot going on let’s just say and poor Kyon will have to go through a lot of stuff.

I will be the first person to admit that the plot of this anime is kind of goofy. Rather, I should say that’s the point. It is supposed to be absurd. Because this anime is driven by the characters and not the plot. So everything in the plot happens to further facilitate character interactions and development. That plot doesn’t need to make sense because it is not meant to be a serious story. It just exists for the characters, it exists to give them something to deal with.

Characters

I already mentioned how ingrained the character development in this series is in the plot. This is doubly true for Haruhi because everything in this series happens because of her. And she is a suitably complex character, most of the plot revolves around exploring her character more. That doesn’t mean that the other characters aren’t good though. The main cast is very well-written and all of them go together with Kyon very nicely. Honestly, the only thing I can complain about here is the lack of some interesting side characters.

Animations and Soundtracks

I mean do I even need to say anything here? It is Kyoto Animation, one of the best animation studios of all time. Of course, the production of this and the sequel movie is amazing. The art style is immediately recognizable, it looks nice and fluid and the character designs are good as well. And the same goes for the soundtracks,

Summing Up

Here’s why you should watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:

  • Interesting plot
  • Amazing characters
  • Great character dynamics
  • Cute art style and animations

That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments, and I will take my leave here. See ya!
