Muv-Luv, VN Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:

  • Muv-Luv’s plot evolves across three parts (Extra, Unlimited, Alternative), shifting genres from slice-of-life to sci-fi and delivering a cohesive story that builds upon itself.
  • Characters are consistently developed across timelines, showcasing different sides and growth, especially for Takeru, whose memories carry over between parts.
  • Despite its early 2000s anime art style, the VN remains visually appealing and narratively rich, making it a must-play for its unique plot twists and character arcs.

So you wanted to watch the Muv-Luv anime cause Muse Asia was airing but everything went over your head. Don’t worry, I was in the same boat. It took me a while to get this series but now that I’ve been through all three games, I can understand why it is well-liked by so many people. The genre-shifting across the three games is pretty crazy but it all makes sense once you reach the final game, Alternative. And I promise once you are through all three games, you won’t regret it.

So welcome back to another edition of our recommendation series. This week we are talking about Muv-Luv the VN. This will be a little complex so let’s get right into it.

Introduction

Right, so the Muv-Luv series is made by Age Studios. It is a game series for Windows with the original game released in 2003 and the sequel released in 2006. The original game consists of two parts, Extra and Unlimited. The sequel is called Alternative and it directly follows the events of Unlimited. All three parts are in alternate timelines but each part builds upon the plot of the previous one so you’ll be left confused if you play them out of order. So let’s talk about them

Plot

Let’s start with Extra. Extra is a light-hearted slice-of-life story. The main job of this part is to introduce all the important characters and get the player familiarized with them. Unlimited is where things start to get crazy. Unlimited is a coming-of-age story. Turns out that in the Unlimited timeline, aliens have invaded the Earth, and the characters we grew familiar with like Sumika are nowhere to be found. The job of this part is to introduce the aliens, and the mechas and give us an overview of the terrible situation around the world.

The contrast between Extra and Unlimited/Alternative really is crazy

Alternative is again in an alternate timeline. But this one is very similar to the Unlimited timeline. Unlimited ended with a bad ending and Alternative is the “correction” to that bad ending as Takeru with his memories of the Unlimited timeline can help a lot more against the alien threat. It sounds complex like this but when you play the games one by one, it makes a lot more sense. But yeah the plot especially the synergy between Unlimited and Alternative is really cool and that alone is enough to make this VN worth checking out.

Characters

Because of how the plot builds on the events of the previous part, we get a lot of character development. We get to see different sides of familiar characters depending on the part you are playing so that deepens their writing a lot. Yes, even though Yoroi’s gender is changed she still gets a lot of character development. Takeru gets a lot of development across the parts as well, especially since he keeps his memories of the previous part. I can’t talk much about Sumika without getting into spoilers but she’s great as well.

Art

This VN has the typical 90s anime art style. I really like that art style so it’s still appealing to me. That might not be the case for you. Still despite how old the VN is, the art still looks great. Also, as typical of early 2000s VNs, it does have those scenes. So consider yourself warned. Though I am pretty sure you can download a patch to skip those.

Summing Up

Here’s why you should read/play Muv-Luv:

  • Amazing plot
  • Consistently evolving plotline
  • Jumps across multiple genres
  • Great characters

So yeah, that is all for now. I will go back to playing Persona 3 now. Check out this week’s anime recommendation here and I will see ya!
