So while we may not be able to see Kamisato Ayato till at least next year, there is a different Ayato I wanna talk about today, Amagiri Ayato. I may be slightly biased for this anime because I went in with absolutely zero expectations and this turned out to be much better. It is generic, yes, but this anime is entertaining as hell. It is a shame that we will probably never see a sequel for this one.

Welcome back to another week of our recommendation series! You have read the title you know we are talking about Gakusen Toshi Asterisk this week. It is very much one of those anime that is really fun to watch despite being mostly generic. Give this anime a few episodes to breathe, and it may just surprise you. So let’s get into a little more details.

Introduction

Gaskusen Toshi Asterisk is the anime adaptation of the LN of the same name. The LN is written by Miyazaki Yuu and illustrated by okiura. It started publishing on 25th September 2012 and is still ongoing. This makes me think that the hope for an anime sequel is not completely lost as it is the 10th anniversary of the LN next year. Anyway, season 1 of the anime had a split cours of 12 episodes each. Cour 1 aired from 3rd October 2015 to 19th December 2015 and cour 2 aired from 2nd April 2016 to 18th June 2016.

As I always say, being generic is not always bad. That is very true for Gakusen Toshi Asterisk because this anime manages to be really fun to watch despite being generic. Being fun to watch is the most important part of an anime in my opinion.

Plot

There is nothing much to say about the plot of Gakusen Toshi Asterisk. It is literally about a tournament of students in tag teams. The winners get any one of their wishes granted as long as they are possible to do. It is exactly what you’d expect of a tournament-style anime, full of fights. Some of them are really good.

There are also certain times when Gakusen Toshi Asterisk goes out of its way to stop being generic for a while. Like when they did backstories for Ayato and Kirin, they were among the more uncommon backgrounds. Moments like these make Gakusen Toshi Asterisk better and more entertaining than other anime of this style.

Characters

Once again, nothing much to say here. Gakusen Toshi Asterisk has quite a lot of characters and as a result, not all of them are that well expanded on. As I stated earlier though, some characters like Kirin do have a good backstory and hence, they have more depth than others. Now I like Julis too because she is not your average tsundere as she actually grows to accept Ayato and becomes honest about him.

Ayato himself may appear as your average harem MC for the most part while he is like that; he is a little different too. His motivations and personality are well expanded upon and he is not OP by any stretch as we see him struggle multiple times. Gakusen Toshi Asterisk does its best not to feel like another harem anime even though it is one. For that effort at least, I appreciate it.

Animations and Soundtracks

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk has fairly average animations for 2015-2016. Having said that though, some of the fight music from the anime is really good. And then there is that second opening which is a banger. It is really well edited as well because the transitions in it feel very good and satisfying to watch.
