Shonen Jump + is such a blessing, allowing us to read a lot of good mangas online for free. And it is not piracy. I am really thankful for such services because not all countries have fair prices on manga imports and not all countries have the shipping available to them. In my country, for example, we do have the shipping available but mangas are ridiculously expensive here because of the import costs.

Anyway, though, I stumbled on this manga a few days ago and decided to check it out immediately upon seeing it’s free on Jump +. You have read the title; you know we are talking about Spy x Family this week.

Spy x Family is really interesting and funny. I didn’t in my wildest dreams imagine it to be this good. Well, here is why you should check it out in detail.

Spy x Family is written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. It began serialization biweekly on Shonen Jump + on 25th March 2019. So far, Spy x Family has 8 volumes. An anime adaptation for Spy x Family was also confirmed. It is being worked on by WIT Studio and Clover Works and it is scheduled to come out sometime next year. I am really excited about it, especially because it has 2 really studios working on it.

Coming back to the manga though, Spy x Family is literally the weeb version of the classic movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith but better. The secrets, the dysfunction, and the way that they play make-believe family are so reminiscent of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The kid, Anya adds another level of entertainment to the manga. It is really a fun read.

Plot

The plot of Spy x Family is rather simple on account of it being a comedy manga. It follows Twilight who is a well-known spy. Now for his next mission, he needs a family and a fake identity to succeed so he takes on the name Loid Forger, adopts a little girl, and marries an office worker. Unknown to him though, the little girl is an esper and can read thoughts, and his wife Yor, is a deadly assassin.

Despite being simple, you can kind of already guess what makes Spy x Family so much fun to read. It is absolutely nuts how far everyone goes to keep their secrets. Anya knows what’s going on but she keeps quiet because she thinks it is fun, just like we do.

Characters

There are only 3 characters of note to talk about in Spy x Family: Loid, Yor, and Anya. Yor’s made-up persona is just so well done, it feels corny at times but it’s intentional. She is a total badass when she is on her job though. Loid normally acts like an ideal husband doing all the cooking and stuff for Yor he is still a really cool character though.

The MVP of Spy x Family is definitely Anya though. This kid is much more than you’d first imagine. She doesn’t tell about her ability to read minds to any of her parents. She is happy that her parents are such badasses and she thinks it is fun and wants her life to continue like this. Hat’s off kid, well done!!

Art

The art is subjective as always but, I like Spy x Family’s art. Granted, it may not be the best manga art you have ever seen but, it is still pretty great. I love all of the character designs. In particular, though, I think Loid looks really good. But, that’s probably just me because I like highly intelligent but slightly arrogant characters a lot (because they remind me of myself). Anya is really adorable though.
