Article at a glance:

  • Hell’s Paradise stands out with its eerie mix of peace and terror, delivering a style of dread unlike any other manga. The brutal, unpredictable world-building is a huge draw.
  • Gabimaru’s unreliable narration adds layers of intrigue to the plot, while his dynamic with Sagiri drives much of the story’s emotional development.
  • Inspired by Buddhist mythology, the manga’s unsettling creature designs and tense atmosphere make Hell’s Paradise a visual masterpiece.

I’ve read the Hell’s Paradise manga before. But I recently, I don’t know why I decided to revisit it. Probably because I saw Season 2 in the “Top Upcoming” section of MAL. But regardless, I was reminded quickly of why this manga is so unique. There isn’t anything else like Hell’s Paradise out there. It is weird, it is brutal, and the art has a strange mixture of peace and terror… You won’t find this particular style of dread in any other manga. Hell’s Paradise is just different. And it has an amazing plot to top it all off.

So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series, this week we are talking about Hell’s Paradise. I love this manga and I have a lot to say. So let’s get right into it.

Introduction

Hell’s Paradise manga is written and illustrated by Kaku Yuuji. It was serialized in Shounen Jump+ from January 2018 to January 2021. The manga is rather short coming in at just 128 chapters compiled into 13 volumes. Mappa adapted the manga into an anime, the first season came out last year and the second season is currently in production. The anime is amazing so you can watch that and wait for the second season if you don’t wish to read the manga.

Plot

The plot follows Gabimaru the Hollow, a ninja infamous for being emotionless. He was set up by his fellow Iwagakure Ninja and now he just wants to die. Except, that’s not true. He refuses to admit it but he has a reason to live and as such, no execution method used is effective on him. A while later, the famous executioner, Asaemon is assigned to him. But, she has a proposal for him. In exchange for a full pardon from the Shogunate, he has to accompany her to an island to the south of Japan to find the elixir of life.

Of course, things are not that simple. Gabimaru won’t be the only criminal heading to the island. And once they all arrive at the island, it is filled with horrors beyond anyone’s comprehension. This won’t be a simple fetch quest as no one was ready for what the island had in store for them. Yeah, as you can imagine, the world-building on display here is fantastic. The plot serves as a great mystery as well as we know nothing about the island and learn about it along with the cast. Throw some unexpected plot twists into the mix and yeah, you won’t be putting this down for a while.

Characters

Gabimaru is an amazing MC. He is an unreliable narrator so you are never sure of what is truly going on inside his head. I won’t say anything more than that to avoid spoilers. But some of the best plot twists in the series stem from him. Sagiri is another awesome character. Her dynamic with Gabimaru and her character development are integral to the series. These two are supported by a great roster of side characters like Yuzuriha, Shion, Aza, etc.

Art

The art of Hell’s Paradise is immaculate. There is no other manga like this. Think of Junji Itou-style body horror and mix it in with a heavy inspiration from Buddhist mythology. It is weird, the monster designs will make you feel uncomfortable. And the island itself despite all its natural beauty always feels scary providing a tense atmosphere. Of course, the action sequences are equally amazing.

That is all for now

Here’s why you should check out Hell’s Paradise manga:

That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments, I will take my leave here. Also, check out my thoughts on how the TYBW anime adaptation has improved on Yhwach’s character here! And yeah, see ya!
