Initial D Sequel, “Subaru and Subaru” Now Out!

Article at a glance:
- Subaru and Subaru is here, and yes — we’re finally stepping away from the Toyota era. New car, new style, same Shigeno madness.
- First chapter just dropped in Weekly Young Magazine’s 34th issue, right after MF Ghost wrapped up in June.
- Haven’t read it yet, but let’s talk expectations, why MF Ghost felt different, and what I hope this new sequel nails.

Well, ain’t this a surprise. I don’t remember how the MFG manga concluded, but it is nice seeing that the author is still willing to keep the series going. And judging by the title, I guess we are finally moving away from Toyotas lol? Cause you know, Takumi and Kanata both drove Toyotas as their “main car”. What’s even funnier is that Bunta, Takumi’s father, buys a Subaru after handing Takumi the AE86 lol. But yeah, here we are with another Initial D sequel and, of course, I look forward to it.
So welcome back to another news article. Today, we are talking about the new Initial D/MFG Sequel! The sequel is called “Subaru to Subaru,” and that is the Japanese “to” by the way, which means “and”, which is why I used “Subaru and Subaru” in the title. But, I digress, let’s get into the details.

about the new Initial D/MFG Sequel
They basically shadow dropped this one lol. Because I don’t remember there being an official announcement for this. Regardless, the first chapter of Subaru and Subaru came out earlier this week in the 34th issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine. I have not had a chance to read it yet, but the manga continues the same plotline from Initial D and, more specifically, MFG. As we all know, MFG concluded its serialization earlier this year on June 6th in the 23rd issue of the Weekly Young Magazine.
That’s all you need to know regarding the Subaru and Subaru launch. So let’s move on to
My Thoughts
Once again, fair disclaimer, I haven’t had a chance to read the first chapter of Subaru and Subaru, so I am not sure what the setting is like. So I will just speak about what I want from Subaru and Subaru in broad strokes. So I’ll keep it simple. See, MF Ghost was not bad by any means, but the thing is, bro, every single victory in Initial D felt emotional, while every single victory in MFG feels technical. This automatically gave Initial D more drama while also building on characters.

This is the reason why MF Ghost characters often feel shallow compared to Initial D. What I wish is that Shigeno realizes this issue and adds the Initial D flair to Subaru and Subaru. He has already made an interesting choice by picking a Subaru because, as we know, Subarus are usually 4WDs, which brings in a completely different driving style from Toyotas, the previous 2 protagonists had been using. So I really wish Shigeno would take this contrast to the heart and just go wild with it.
I look forward to seeing all the insane car action that comes from this manga lol, we need more car mangas, period.
That is all for now
I’ll let a couple more chapters come out before diving into Subaru and Subaru, so you can expect another article on this in the following weeks. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Let me know what you would like to see from this new manga. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
