Noragami, Manga Recommendation of the Week!

Article at a glance:

  • Noragami explores the world of forgotten gods and their interactions with humans, offering a fresh take on mythology.
  • From Yato’s complex journey to Yukine and Hiyori’s growth, the manga delves deep into its characters, offering compelling development and interactions.
  • With striking visuals and well-executed action scenes, Noragami delivers a visually appealing experience alongside its captivating storyline.

Well, I am quite surprised that I didn’t know that Noragami came from a manga. I always assumed that it was based on a LN instead. Well, a manga is easier to catch up with and I did just that, Picked up right where the anime left off and read it till the end. The manga just ended earlier this year too so that’s convenient as well. So here we are, talking about Noragami once again today.

And I have to say, that, unfortunately, the anime never got a Season 3. The manga improved a lot in the later parts and the ending was pretty good too. Season 2 of the anime already has some pretty high stakes but things just kept spiraling after that and I enjoyed reading through it. So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series, this week we are talking about Noragami!

Check out the manga on Amazon!

Noragami manga is written and illustrated by Adachitoka. The manga was serialized in the monthly Shounen Magazine from December 2010 to January 2024. The manga is 109 chapters long and they are compiled into 27 volumes. As for the anime, it has 2 seasons and a bunch of OVA all made by Bones. Of course, the anime does not cover all of the manga as Season 2 aired all the way back in 2015. But you can check out the anime before jumping on the manga, it is pretty good.

Noragami, as the title says, is about a stray god. Well, what does that mean? In this world, there are a lot of gods and their influence and power depend upon how many people worship them. The gods are also tasked with cleansing the Youkai. Yato is an old war god fading into obscurity because no one remembers him anymore so he takes on odd jobs from anyone who prays to him for just 5 yen. The story mainly follows him, his Shinki: Yukine, and Hiyori, who got her soul knocked out of her body.

That was just the baseline. There is a lot of plot to dive into in Noragami. Quite a few twists and a lot of good arcs to sink your teeth into. The pacing is also pretty good in my opinion and the manga does a good job of keeping the reader interested over a long reading session because of how well-paced it is. The world-building is good and the series showcases how the power dynamics of the gods work very well.

Yato is a great character. He doesn’t get massive character development, compared to someone like Yukine but he does get some and it is quite well done. Yukine and Hiyori get a lot of character development and it is handled quite well. Other gods like Bishamon, Kofuku, and Ebisu are really well-written as well. The series goes through the trouble of giving the Shinkis of all these gods distinct personalities too.

The character interactions and dynamics between the trio of Yato, Hiyori, and Yukine are always good and the trio plays a big role in each other’s development as well.

Noragami has some really good art. I know Yato looks like a goofball at times but there are times when he looks really cool. Ebisu has such a cool design as well. I wish the fan service was a little toned down, especially when it comes to Bishamon but I don’t it is too bad. The action scenes are quite well done too.
