Potential Dragon Ball Remake?

Articlt at a glance:

  • Dragon Ball Daima animator Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru expressed interest in a remake of the original Dragon Ball, though the decision lies with Toei.
  • Recent remakes like Fruits Basket and Ranma 1/2 show demand for modernized classics, with the One Piece remake further proving the trend.
  • A high-budget Dragon Ball Z remake, similar to Bleach TYBW, could refine the story and remove filler, making it a dream project for fans.

Not to get your hopes up too high but what we are talking about today are not rumors or confirmed projects. We are just looking at what a potential Dragon Ball Remake could look like and what sparked all this remake discussion. So recently, one of the lead animators of Dragon Ball Daima, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru went on a French YouTube channel, DBTimes, and spoke about how he would love to make a remake of the original series. Nakatasuru is credited with designing the recent Super Saiyan 4 transformation which people really liked so his words hold weight.

So welcome back to another article. I don’t even know what to classify this article as, since this certainly isn’t “news” per se. But hey, today we are talking about what a potential Dragon Ball Remake could be and going over Nakatsuru’s words to let’s get started.

About what Nakatsuru Said

So first and foremost, you find the original clip from DBTimes here. Of course, it is in French and I don’t understand French so I will have to rely on translations. Specifically, I will be using this translation thread by @Venixys on Twitter. But basically, when asked about a potential remake, Nakatsuru commented that he’d be more than happy to work on one. Of course, the final say is still with Toei but it seems that people like Nakatsuru would be more than interested in making one.

He then also went on to say that “it could happen” but again, the final say lies with Toei. And I hope that they come to see that there is legitimate fan interest in a remake of the original series.

Byt that covers everything you need to know about the whole situation. So let’s move on to

My Thoughts

Remakes of old animes have been doing great recently. Fruits Basket started the trend by introducing that series to a much broader audience. And more recently, we had the awesome remake of Ranma 1/2. And of course, the One Piece Remake by WIT Studio is still under development. This shows that there is genuine interest in seeing old shows with modern animations. And I am inclined to agree. The OG Dragon Ball series could be the perfect shot of nostalgia and introduce a lot more people to how Dragon Ball really started.

If they decide to then go on and give Dragon Ball Z a fresh coat of paint though, that would be peak. Imagine Dragon Ball Z with Jujutsu Kaisen levels of animation budget. Actually, a better template would be the Bleach TYBW anime adaptation. The TYBW anime removes all filler content, smoothes out the story, and adds a whole bunch of new content. A “remaster” like that for Dragon Ball Z would be absolutely fantastic. But I am getting ahead of myself there.

That is all for now

But yeah, I really look forward to seeing if anything comes of this discussion. I really do think that a remake of the OG Dragon Ball could do wonders for all of us and it would be something to remember Toriyama by. With that said though, I will take my leave here. See ya!
